West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya is still defending the violent take over of Nandigram by the CPM.

On Tuesday, justifying the bloodshed he said those controlling Nandigram were paid back in their own coin.

Today while sticking to his stand, Bhattacharya said he spoke as a party leader and not as the chief minister of West Bengal.

Thousands of people protested on the streets of Kolkata against the violence in Nandigram and Buddhadeb's defiance.

"I stick to that. Some people are trying to project that the violence was started by CPI-M workers. Last 11 months, the Bhoomi Uchched Pratirodh Committee, the Trinamool Congress and the Maoists were creating violence with arms. And last two-three days, CPI-M workers had paid them back in their own coin," said Bhattacharya.

There were qualifiers that he is speaking as a CPI-M party leader and not as a chief minister. But after the widespread condemnation of yesterday's statement, no one was listening.

The silence of the masses led by artists and intellectuals is breaking out into a roar against the manner in which the government has handled Nandigram.

Not only Kolkata's intelligentsia, Buddhadeb's own Left Front partners took him to task for his attempt to justify the eye for an eye policy in Nandigram.

Meanwhile, the state government has allotted Rs one crore for relief and resettlement of those returning home.

Supporting CPI(M) state secretary Biman Bose's statement that there was a "new dawn" in Nandigram following the "recapture", Bhattacharjee said the government has allocated Rs one crore from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund for relief and rehabilitation.

"The fund is being sent to the (East Midnapore) District Magistrate. From this, Rs 1,000 would be given to the returning families for reconstruction of fully-damaged houses and Rs 500 for partially damaged ones. Each family would be given another Rs 1,000 for buying utensils," he said.

He added that the funds would be given to the affected families irrespective of their political affiliation. (With PTI Inputs)

I am not a CPM supporter, but I support Buddhadev (not CPM party though) even in Nandigram issue. Buddhadev is one of the best chief ministers India ever had, as I think. And West Bengal’s best chance to come back to the track of development and better governance is Buddhadev (and very few of his ministers like Nirupam Sen, Surjakanta Mishra etc). But the efficacy of Buddhadev is severely restricted by many in his own party, mainly some “theoretical” leaders in CPM politebureau, e.g Prakash Karat. That state is very unfortunate that there is practically no opposition. BJP lost all its chance by aligning with an immature, whimsical, stupid political leader like Mamta Banerjee. Congress, as usual, is a party full of highly opportunist, backboneless “leaders” without any base (you can call it “cadre” or ground level supporter). All these political parties are only playing to the galleries, least interested to solve the problem or improvement of the state.

Obviously Bhuddadev Bhattacharya has done most notorious crime openly .Not only that he has openly supported the murder, burning of houses of innocent poor people by his party criminals. More grave thing he indirectly but intentionally supported the rape of many innocent people. Dhananjoy Chattered has raped one lady and for that reason he had got Death penalty. Buddha backed criminals had raped a large number of ladies. Why same sentence is not awaiting for them?

It is clear that the left failed to control the situation in nandigram, but it is really surprising that the so called intellectuals have suddenly jumped on to the street to protest, looks like they were all hibernating for the last 11 months...

This is clearly state sponsored terrorism. Buddha is equal to Laden. Also the centre has turned its face away and has a part to play in this as left has now supported the nuclear deal. The country is going to dogs with central(Italian) and state government (Chinese). Get Indian government installed.

In Nandigram there is forceful acquisition to land for SEZ. Where as in Gujarat and even in Hariyana, business houses are purchasing at market rate. That model is also appropriate for Nandigram and there is no such problem as Nandigram .

Buddhadev Bhattacharjee represents the real face of the CPM. Does this party have any moral right to speak against Narendra Modi?

People of Bengl would prefer Stalin to Hitler any day. Budha is a far better option than Mamata and Modi.

The face of Buddhadev Bhattacharjee with a cryptic smile is the typical visage of unrepenting Stalinism.Every day the face glows in enhancing arrogance and brutality. He appears to take enormous pride in being a party boss rather than a democratic voice of constitutional commitment to the people of West Bengal. He has grown an alarmingly consistent habit of insulting the media, the opposition, the intelligentsia, and whosoever dares to question his line of action..The Stalinist megalomaniac is hell-bent to destroy the entire fabric of democratic governance in our state.

Nandigram incident has exposed the true characyer of LEFTS and their idelogy which is matching with mioists and china and shows their commitments on violence. The brutality shown on armless farmers and poors, ladies and children is the most disgraceful incident of the country and shamed for democracy. The sttement of CM is very unfortunate and shows the manner adopted by LEFTS to bring into power. The silence by Sonia,PM and other allies of UPA is ashtonishin and reflects true character of our politicians. Now they have no right to talk about others. The reaction from intellectuals, social activists, columnists is very poor and shows their double standard.Shame for democracy.

The relief for destroyed and partially destroyed houses are Rs 10000 and Rs 5000. Jeez NDTV!!! I see people demanding Buddhadeb's dismissal, which is justified. Why is not anyone asking that Mamta Banerjee be deported to some remote corner like Antarctica? She is the one who instigated all this bloodshed, by holding on to her garb of anti-land acquisition agitator, when the SEZ had been scrapped. And where was NDTV's Nandigram specials when the frmers with CPM leanings had been kept out of their homes for 11 months?

Is it not appropriate to compare Buddha’s culture and politics with the middle age rulers like Chengis Khan and Nadir Shah? His own minister Rozzaq Mollah in his gentle words compared him earlier with Alauddin Kholji Again and again I am sending my earnest appeal to His Excellency Chief Justice of India to take appropriate step to save the people of Nandigram from the brutal, arrogant and criminal CPM leaders of West Bengal.
