Pak under emergency, CJ sacked
NDTV Correspondent
Saturday, November 03, 2007, (Islamabad)
On a day of fast packed developments in Pakistan, President Pervez Musharraf imposed emergency and suspended the constitution.
He also sacked Chief Justice Iftekhar Mohammed Chaudhry and appointed justice Abdul Hameed Dogar as the new chief justice of Pakistan.
Musharraf announced the Provisional Constitutional Order, which can't be challenged in court.
He met with Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and other key government officials in Islamabad on Saturday evening before imposing emergency.
The decision to impose emergency has been taken in the light of an impending Supreme Court order, which the government feared might have gone against the president.
However, the Supreme Court has rejected the decision and an eight-judge bench of the apex court refused to take oath under the provisional order.
After the declaration of emergency, troops entered the Supreme Court premises and removed CJ Iftekhar Chaudhry. He has now been taken into protective custody.
Musharraf and the judiciary in Pakistan have been on a collision course since the Chief Justice was sacked. Later he was reinstated following wide spread protests across the country.
Move condemned
Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has strongly condemned the move and said this is an unprecedented move in the history of Pakistan.
He said the situation in the country is grave and that all the political forces will have to sit down for a solution.
Cricketer-turned-politician and leader of Tehrike Insaf Imran Khan lashed out at the president and termed the move as treason. He also called for death penalty for Musharraf.
In a response to the latest development in Pakistan, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee met with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The Ministry of External Affairs has issued a statement, which said, "We regret the difficult times Pakistan is passing through. We trust conditions of normalcy will return to Pakistan."
The European Union has also condemned the decision to impose emergency in Pakistan. The British Foreign Office has said it is assessing the situation and will issue a statement.
The government has also suspended Fundamental Rights of the citizens. All the news channels have been taken off air and mobile phone signals and Internet connections jammed.
Security measures have been high across the country. Islamabad has been placed under high security and 1,500 security personnel have been moved into the city.
However, Senate, provincial assemblies and chief ministers will continue to function under the provisional constitution.

If situatin gets more worse, its time for Musharraf to impose a self-exile on himself.

Pakistan today, more than ever, has turned into a "failed state" with nuclear weapons ruled by a megalomaniac dictator! Bizarrely Musharraf has proclaimed martial law and carried out a coup against himself on grounds that the administration, which he has headed (& micromanaged) for the last eight years has been an abject failure! It is a frightening and scary thought that an incompetent leader with limited intellect and mediocre abilities has his finger on the nuclear trigger. The World community needs to act now and impose immediate sanctions against the illegal regime of Musharraf to ensure Constitution, democracy, rule of law and the Judiciary are restored without delay. Mussaraf is a dangerous person. For power he will do anything. He is just playing the games with the world in terrorism. He is the man behind recent past incidents in the world. I think Indian government should not involve in the pakistan's crisis unless their people want Indian gov to re-establis the democracy in pakistan. We have been obaserving Pakistan is too much involving in the terrorism activities in India through muslim community. It is a very dangerous situation. This is very important to the people of India to avoid the muslims. Or else Muslims should take a responsibility to protest the terrorism activities in India.

President Mussaraf has finally succeded in isolating himself both, from the Army (who see him as an "American Stooge") and the civilain public. As an Indian I would be very alarmed with a disentegrating nuclear neighbour on my west in Pakistan, with a Jehadi-Talibani-Kashmiri on my north, not to mention a unstable junta on my east in Mynamar. The strange thing is the US reaction, they condemn the non-nuclear military Junta in Mynamar and tacitly support a nuclear military Junta in Pakistan !!! Shame!!!

Pakistan is harvesting what they sowed long time ago. The Army and the political parties used religion as a tool to pull the people against India and groomed them as terrorist against India(external enemy). Now the same rule of engagement is backfiring it. This is what exactly would ever happen if any country throw its responsibility and out of way groom their people as terrorist by offering all means. US also should be blamed for its role in grooming Taleban within Pakistan( for her its cold war doctrine ). Since Taleban is the product of US, Made in Pakistan against Soviets, US need to assist in all means to bring back Law and order in Pak. Of course, it will take generations to build Pak from what it is today, the breeding ground for terrorism.

The judiciary and the political parties, instead of confronting Gen Musharaf, should support him in his fight against the growing Islamic militancy. They should realise that the real enemies of their country are the Islamic militants. Democracy for Pakistan, at this moment, is not the solution for tackling the militancy. They should rally behind Musharaf in tackling this menace

It would be naive to think that any adverse developments in its neighbouring countires has no impact on India. A stable and strong neighbourhood, including Pakistan, is in best interst of India. A return to 'true' democracy, with or without Musharraf, would be welcome worldwide. Also I hope the world's largest democracy, by landmass (USA), recognises the ground realities that Pakistan is a dictatorship like Afghanisatan or Iraq was and North Korea is.

i think this is a time when pakistani people should realize that it is no use hating india and just voting their leaders on the basis of proportion of hatred they have for india. we are democratic and now they should realize that partition was a gross mistake.
