Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday said his country will continue to cooperate with Iran in its nuclear programme, as the two countries along with three other Caspian Sea states agreed not to let their territory be used to launch an attack on any of them.

"Iran and Russia are now cooperating on wide range of issues such as aviation industry and Russia is to continue its contribution to Iran's peaceful nuclear programme," Putin said after a day-long summit of Caspian Sea states in Tehran.

Russia and western countries are at odds over Iran's nuclear programme, with the US and its allies accusing Tehran of trying to built atomic weapons. Iran insists that its programme is purely for generation of power.

The five countries attending the summit, which consist of Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Russia and Iran agreed that "under no circumstances will (members) allow the use of their territories by other states for an aggression or other military actions against any of the parties".

The declaration at the end of the summit, which also supported every country's right to pursue a civilian nuclear programme, came after Putin earlier said no member state should allow its territory to be used to attack its
neighbours.

The remarks were apparently directed at Azerbaijan, whose airfields were inspected by the US, leading to speculation that they could be used as the site to launch strikes on Iran.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the Caspian states have also agreed to form an economic cooperation organisation.
