The Indo-US nuclear deal stand off between UPA and the Left will not bring down the government, at least not for now.

The UPA and the Left on Thursday agreed on a compromise formula and also agreed on the formation of a committee to look at Left objections to the 123 agreement.

A statement was issued after the Left-UPA meet. It said: "In view of the certain objections raised by the Left parties on the Indo-US bilateral agreement it has been decided to constitute a committee to go into these issues."

The committee will look into certain aspects of the bilateral agreement:
  • The implication of the Hyde Act on the 123 agreement
  • Self reliance in the nuclear sector
  • The implication of nuclear agreement on foreign policy and security cooperation.
The committee will examine these issues and the operationalisation of the deal will take into account the committee's findings.

Both sides are giving their own spin to this development, while the Left says this means all negotiations are on hold and the government won't proceed any further without checking with them.

Whereas, the Congress says its does not mean that negotiations have come to a halt, they also insist that the slowdown is only temporary and the nuclear deal won't be surrendered.

However, the bottom line is that both sides have found a workable middle ground.

Speaking on behalf of the government, Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal made it clear that the government's understanding of the operationalisation of the 123 agreement is different from the perception of the Left.

Earlier one of the constituents of the Left the Forward Bloc had told NDTV that the government has assured that the nuclear deal talks have been put on hold.

Problem with the Left

The government on Thursday morning had admitted that there was a problem with the Left over the Indo-US nuclear deal.

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee who had held a meeting with CPM leader Sitaram Yechury over the impasse said there was a deadlock.

The PM met with top Congress leaders to discuss the impasse. Congress Core Committee also met to discuss a way out of the current impasse.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress President Sonia Gandhi and External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee attended the meeting.

Defence Minister A K Antony and Ahmed Patel were also present at the meet.

The government has made it clear to the Left that it is not going ahead on talks with the IAEA next month.

This is an ugly facet of coalition politics that in spite of negotiating a fantastic deal, the government of India must now pander to the whims and fancies of a (mostly regional) political party that is ideologically defunct and intellectually bankrupt. We, as citizens of India need to ensure that such backward thinking organizations are relegated to their rightful place in history books and do not become an obstacle to India’s growth and prosperity.

Ditry politics by Dirty politician. This is the real face of left parties. Why they don't pull out the support instead of playing this dirty politics? Every one know they will sit outside of parliament after next elections and that's why they are showing their presence now by playing such games. They never envisioned any thing properly and the best example is Bengal's poor performance which is ruled by this party for around 3 decades. PM is not fooling the country, its the 'left' who is fooling us.These left party workers uses foreign technology in their daily life - TV (technology came from foreign), imported cars, traveling in boeing Planes (made in USA) and after using all these things they say that no relations with foreign countries. If left doesn't like using all these new technologies then they should follow the old monks and go to 'Himalayas' for meditation instead of playing this dirty politics. Dumb politicans.

This news should come as a relief to the citizens. The three issues shortlisted for assessing the nuclear deal aptly address all the areas of concern and any brain-storming between the parties in power, along with the recent flexible approch shown by the the oppositioion, should lead to a much better understanding of the deal. The final decision taken on in the matter will then reflect the collective wisdom of the elected representatives of the country and instil greater confidence amongst the people.

The Left is playing dirty politics and endangering India's energy security. Their objective is to garner minority votes by appearing to be antagonistic towards the US. In this process, they are ignoring India's increasing energy demands and the fact that without energy, the current rate of growth in the economy cannot be sustained. Also, it is very unfortunate that the Manmohan Singh government does not have the spine to stand up to these Communists who have not contributed one iota to India's development. Communism all over the world is on the decline, and has been proven to be ineffective as a catalyst towards human development and prosperity. India needs to shed its communist parties and move towards capitalism and market-oriented government policies. Only then will we be able to alleviate poverty and give every Indian access to the global economy. This kind of isolationist and appeasement oriented politics is extremely harmful to the nation's democracy and economy.
