NDTV has learnt that the man who decided to withdraw the appeal for Quattrocchi's extradition is none other than Law Minister HR Bhardwaj.

What's shocking is that the CBI, which is an autonomous organisation was only informed after the decision had already been taken.

In fact, the matter should not have gone to Law Ministry in the first place. This is because according to Argentine laws, once the CBI's appeal was turned down by a lower court, it went automatically to the Argentinian Supreme Court.

"If it is proven that the Law Minister has intervened on behalf of the Quattrocchi then we will demand his resignation," said Vijay Kumar Malhotra, BJP leader, reacting to the report.

He also said that new facts related to the case were emerging each day.

Previous cases

This is not the first time that the law ministry has been found interfering in the ways of functioning of the CBI. In the past

The ministry turned down CBI's decision to appeal against the acquittal of Railways Minster Laloo Prasad Yadav's dispropotionate asset case.

Similarly, CBI wanted to appeal against bail to Amit Jogi. This was before he was acquitted but even there, the Law ministry with the help of an Additional Solicitor General's opinion, said that it was not fit for appeal.

And finally, it was the law ministry and its officers who pushed for defreezing of Quattrocchi's London bank accounts.

There are better uses for country's resources than flogging the dead horse of "Bofors". There has to be a sense of proportanality in throwing money and resources in chasing commission agents in a gun deal. The world over, such deals have commission agents. It is the job of buyer to negotiate the best deal; why should we be bothered if commission agent gets paid commission by the vendor?

The Quatrocchi case is a fit case of congress and its allies including left parties stooping so low by not reacting. Are we a nation of corrupt people across the board or we are heading for a blood bath in the coming days. I see a day when our now discipleaned military says enough is enough and takes over the rule to govern the country. I will support that since our political morals are eating the values and country.

Hi NDTV Keep it up UR investigative journalisim. It is proved beyond doubt that Our beloved PM, President and entire cabinet of great India is pawn in the hands of our super PM (guss who?) It is shame on the part of law minister instead of upholding the rule of the law he connoyed with super PM and alowed the accussed to go scotch free. If UR report is true the minister should quit All of us know that he will not.

so much national energy and time has been wasted on this issue and the amount of money spent over the years is more than the commisions paid!no wonder the national budget runs on a deficit !and this is a mockery and the opposition should go for the CBI and the law minister !

Is this what Great country India deserves? A Law minister instead giv9ng proper Law to citizens of India has become a sevant of one person to keep his position. There is no more shame. What are the LEFT parties doing? concentrate only on nuclear because USA is involved? why are they not making public the discussions they had about defreezing Q assets in UK? It shows they Leftist parties are not interested in welfare of country but only to keep leverage on govt.

Most interesting thing is Left parties does not consider such events to trigger re-think their support to UPA govt.

HR Bharadwaj owes his position as Law Minister to his single minded devotion and subservience to the Gandhi family. So it should not surprise anybody when he is found to bend, break and remake rules to favor his goddess Sonia Gandhi and her friends. We Indians deserve this and nothing better.
