Controversial writer Taslima Nasreen was attacked by an unruly crowd at the Hyderabad Press club on Thursday.

Three MLAs of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen or MIM were among those who attacked her.

They verbally abused the writer and flung whatever they could lay their hands on at her for her alleged anti-muslim remarks.

The MLAs were detained after the incident.

The Bangladesh born writer was there for the release of the telugu version of her book Sokhe at the press club when some 30 activists first raised slogans against her for alleged anti-Muslim remarks and then got rough.

"We are not bothered about our MLA status. We are Muslims first. And its our responsibility to test those who have said anything against Islam in which ever way possible," said Akbaruddin Owaisi, MIM MLA.

Taslima Nasreen who escaped unhurt, said she was in a state of shock.

"I believe in democracy. I hope to live safe in this country as a democrat.

"The people who attacked me are a minority .I got support and sympathy from majority of people. I thank them," she said while speaking to NDTV.

Another guest, journalist Innaih Narisetti was injured in the attack.

Meanwhile I&B Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi has condemned the incident.

"It's a very shameful thing if any person is attacked. We criticise this incident in the strongest of terms," he said.

Since the 1990s, Nasreen has faced numerous threats from Islamic groups for her writings.

She has been living in exile for more than ten years now.

It is so shocking that few person has been allowed to hurt a women just because they belong to certain community. Now even in India you have no right of expression, it is turning into a fundamentalist paradise and it was suppose to be a secular country.

Indian secularism is at stake and in danger if people like Akbaruddin Owaisi and the other muslim fundamentalists are allowed to get away with such babaric and inhuman acts as publicly assaulting and hurting a defenseless woman. I think Owaisi should be immediately thrown out of assembly and tried as a criminal. If such acts are not severely dealt with, these people will kill someone in broad daylight tomorrow saying they did it for religion. What is the difference between the Taliban and these people. I think the government should cancel the citizenship of such people and they should be packed and sent away to Afganisthan to live under the Taliban rule and then they would realise the importance of a secular and democratic country. Shame on the MIM, shame on Akbaruddin...God will never forgive them for such nasty and cheap acts...

Does anyone know that this same MLA (Akbaruddin) recieved brickbats and chappels and was roughed-up by his Muslim brothers when he went to visit Mecca Masjid immd after the recent bomb blast!!! If MIM wants to regain their lost ground, they are immature and foolish to think that they will win votes with these acts....instead why dont they fight for development in old-city and jobs, land distribution, etc for poor muslims? I pray to God they miserably lose the coming elections so that its a slap on the brothers by their 'own' brothers!!!

If she was attacked so much is said upon her & it is totally nelgected about the reason of attack. I request the whole worl to come out of your well (your Media) & look at the world through your own eyes if you are a real balanced person. I think & is sure that all the comments that are & will be written here are biased towards their own religion or sect. In todays world only the muslims are those who are suffering everywhere in the world may be it is in Gujarat, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Palestine, Bosnia & Serbia. The muslims are the one who are suffering at the hands of non muslims in all part of the world but still they themselves are the terrorists. How is it true? Oh frogs of only Media (All Global Non muslims) come out & if you are a real balance man then weigh your sentences with the ground realities not just by the media.

Its such a shame that Taslima was attacked and humiliated so badly. And its even more worse that a person like Akbaruddin Owaisi instead of condemning such an act, openly supported it. Is this the example he sets? Its wouldnt come as a surprise if such people who resort to such low level acts such as assaulting and abusing in public in the name of religion would suppot terrorism and terrorist activities too in the name if religion. Why such intolerance? Taslima in her book has only brought to light the true Islamic Bangladesh and the plight of women. She deserves an applause for calling a spade a spade. Indian government should provide security to Taslima and ensure her safety, more so because she is a refugee in our country.

It is sad that the muslim community does not come out strongly condemning the behaviour of these MLAs. By not doing so, they lead the rest of the country to believe they support such actions - and that is a tragedy. Noone has a right to assault another person physically or verbally. If you have a problem with that person, go to court and settle it like civilized people.

She is a woman first, guest to our Country and then belongs to any religion. This is such a shame to all politicians who are involved in this coward act. No religion taught to abuse women. No one should be allowed to take these incisive steps and who so ever has taken it should be sent to jail. People have elected their MLA, not to hurt abuse\hurt woman but to serve them. Some politician has said “We are Muslim first and then MLA”. Well, did you use these wordings during election time when you looking for Vote to win the MLA seat. At that time, you were all after MLA seat. MLA should serve and respect the Govt. seat which is given to them by their own People. If you cannot perform your duty, better you resign and sit at your home and let other party\people do their work. Btw, do you know you have equal right to publish your own book and express your feeling but you don’t have right to hurt someone.

Some politicians and Officers think they are not governed by the laws in the country. That is why the MLA's attacked Taslima, they think they are supreme. If there is anything wrong in her book, they can go to court or they can ban the book in any area or it contains any thing that affects the life of any society. But they may be thinking they can handle the law. In the village of pinnakkanad, Kottayam(Dt) of Kerala, some real estate developers started selling the government acquired property. They got the support of KSEB Top officials and Police. Though there was a highcourt stay, the then SI and the KSEB officials done support for the real estate group.Saying High court order is not binding them ,that is only for ordinary people, even if there is any court orders, the government will appoint advocate in government exp. If this is the attitude of top officials how common people will get justice? Will Tuslima can live fearless?

Read At The Heading Of The Same News From IHT (International Herald Tribune) "Exiled Bangladeshi female writer attacked by Muslims in India" This gives an indication that all "Muslims" in our Great India are intolerant & fanatical...Thanks to the MLAs of MIM, these senseless animals bought us good fame in the international arena. If Taslima is to be attacked for her "Anti-Islamic" comments, M.F. Hussain too deserves to be treated the same way...would they have the guts to even raise a faint voice against him??? shame on them and shame on us for electing these barbaric animals to power.

I would like to know the text of OATH that these MIM MLAs took when they were elected. Was Islam anywhere in it? Dont these kind of statements further distance and isolate the muslims and justify what grave mistake and injustice Gandhi did to this nation? Its a common fact now in Hyderabad that MIM is fast losing ground to CPI/CPM and they will do more of these acts & statements to regain the hold. Akbaruddin is an immature, irresponsible & a real fundamentalist, and should be de-barred from entering the Assembly...

I would like to strongly condemn the attack on the Bangladeshi writer, Ms Tasleema Nasreen, by some MLAs of a political party. Whether one likes her writing or not and supports or is against the views expressed by her,no one has the right to attack and injure a writer, who is a lady and a foreigner,in the Press Club in Hyderabad on 9th August,2007. Knowing fully well about the strong views she expresses through her writing, the organizers, of this book release function,Centre for Inquiry, should have taken ample precautions by asking for the presence of some policemen, knowing that some miscreants are always ready to create trouble, probably to get attention. The leader and the followers of the political party in question had the impudence to justify their shameful act. This is a shame for our city of Hyderabad as well as for our country. I strongly condemn the attack.

Congress, Left vie with each other to get the Coimbatore blast accused Madhani out of jail. God know, how much pressure and money was used to dilute the case and release the fundamentalist. Now, he is out and parties are vying with each other to woo him for votes. This guy kills people and he walks out scot-free. That is SECULARISM for you. But, when Taslima voices her opinion, she is COMMUNAL. Now, the so called "Secularists" and their cronies can attack her and still get away. Tomorrow, the MLAs can rape someones wife and kill their sisters in the name of religion. But, they can go scot-free because that is secularism .

Whether its MIM or any damn party. Be it Hindu part or Muslim party. Be it MP or MLA. For whatever reasons: If they attack a woman, there is no need for any discussion. They should be dealt severely. So much for the so called "SECULAR" Sonia's congress, a left front who will finds time in criticising nuke deal, supports anything pro-chinese. Everyone is free to protest peacfully against taslima if they want to. But, to attack her is utter nonsense. These MLAs should be promptly and sternly dealt with. Else, such ppl will be emboldened to get away with any nonsense. WELCOME TO THE "SECULAR" ANARCHY. As long as it is secular and vote bank politics, you can even get away with murder. Way to go CONGRESS, Way to go SONIA, Way to go LEFT FRONT... Even a dog on street would have responded better than you all...

Mera Bharat Mahaan! Hail our politicians..and hail our people, who make goondas/ruffians like these politicians. She might be a controversial writer and she might be right or even wrong. There is a way to stage a protest. Yet, our politicians are so shameless and brazen about indulging in something like this openly...and we people elect them as leaders...Disgrace is an understatement. Hail India, for it is ruled by people like these... and still, they get away with it...thanks to our GREAT JUDICIARY and LAW. Hail them all! India is not going to Dogs. Dogs are much better.

Those Muslim leaders must get exemplary punishment (very unlikely though). We welcome Taslima Nasreen in our country and will prefer religious fanatic like these “leaders” be thrown out to some medieval Islamic state. Indian govt should grant the application for citizenship to Mrs Nasreen. We have enough bowed down to Islamic fanatics. Yes, I’ll equally oppose any harassment to any person who is critical against any Hindu extremism or superstition. Indian Muslims like these coward leaders must understand that a secular democracy like in India has no place for religious fundamentalism. Secularism does not mean bowing down to all the fanatic whims of minority (or majority) people.

Two wrongs don't make a right. we keep hearing about the moderate Muslims who are tolerant and broadminded. Apparently they are too few in number or there aren't any. As far a I know all the religious leaders in the Muslim world get their money from the middle east which tells them to preach the most primitive form of the religion. Unless the government blocks the money we are not going to see any change.

Is this what god and religion stands for, attacking a helpless lady? god doesnt need people like these to defend him/her, god is supposed to be Almighty and can defend himself/herself. Taslima has every right to speak her mind, the same way these people kept reiterating we are muslims first. its people like these give a noble religion the face of terrorism and fundamentalism.

This lady has exposed the fundamentlism of Bangledesh, in penning down the true picture of islamic Bangledesh, where the islam's basics are attempted to be rewritten and redifined in militant way. The miniorities of democtaric and secular India should have hailed her for her stand. Unfortunately, she is attacked, it should be condemned by all.

Taslima Nasreen being attacked in Hyderabad for writing book called Lajja. She is living in exile for almost 12-13 years now. Compare this with M.F. Hussain who painted Goddess in nude and still got away scot free in the name of freedon of expression. i'd like to ask the so called secular parties that why don't they come out strongly now against such vandalism? why are their reaction restricted only against Hindus?

This incident clearly shows the intolerant nature of Islam. The doctrine of hate & bigotry that goes by the name of Islam cannot be allowed to continue. Time & again it has been proved that Islamists cannot take rightful criticism in their stride. This violence against the author should prove beyond doubt the grave danger posed by Islamists & their appeasers to the social fabric of India.

Why do these MIM MLAs, supposed representatives of the people and their constituents, assume they have the right to attack whatever they consider anti-Islamic?? Do they really think they can claim to represent thousands of Indian Muslims in trying to physically assault and harm another human being who, by the way, is a Bangladeshi citizen and has sought respite from the same kind of narrow-minded, fundamentalistic people back home? They have done nothing better and only made things worse - what differentiates these MLAs from the international terrorists of Al-Qaeda, a few who solely claim the right to speak for others? How sad that politicians must resort to violence to get a point across. How sad that these people with no tolerance are the ones who help represent a billion-strong nation with one of the most diverse and varied populations in the world. Welcome to India, citizens of the world -- where terrorists parade as politicians of the people.

I do not understand how writing offensive material about a specific faith can be termed as Secularism. The third rate writers have started targetting sensitive areas just for the sake of getting popular, which is sure to induce havoc in the society.Toelrating such people will for sure lead to much worsening of the peace in the society since these writers will never stop till they get publicity. They are capable of going to any extremes to gain the attention of the public.
