Scientists have developed a technology that can retrieve sounds and conversations that get recorded in the walls around us.

An Indian scientist and a software engineer have been working on the secret project for 17 years costing more than 255 crore rupees.

Their identities are kept secret for security reasons.

"Well, the methodology is in great demand by the Americans and in Europe it's worth billions of dollars," the scientist said.

"We have had kidnap threats, so we can only go public when our security is guaranteed".

Cutting edge technology

NDTV has exclusive access to the cutting edge technology.

Every wall in a room is made up of millions and millions of atoms. Each atom is a collection of electrons, protons and neutrons - all electrically charged and constantly moving.

When anyone inside the four walls of a room speaks, the sound carries energy that travels in waves and hits the walls. When this voice energy hits the atoms in a wall the electrons and protons are disturbed.

Each word spoken hits the atoms with a different energy level and disturbs the atoms differently.

Scientists have worked on the software and technology that can measure how each atom has been disturbed and match each unique disturbance with a unique word.

The technology virtually "replays" the sequence of words that have been spoken inside the walls. It's like rewinding a tape recorder and you can go as far back in history as you want.

Historic secrets

The scientists have already recorded many historic conversations some of which are classified as secret.

They have extracted a few words by Aurangzeb from the walls of the Red Fort in Delhi and from the walls of the Agra Fort. They contain what Shahjahan said to Noorjahan on the night before she died.

It's not just voices from the distant past that can be replayed - when you leave your room at work your boss can tap the walls and hear all that you said.

The amazing technology could change the way we live. Inside the bedroom or boardroom - nothing is a secret any more.

It will change way nations spy on each other and it will most certainly lead to the re-writing of history books. The technology will be available commercially for sale 12 months from now in April 2008.

Energy can neither be created nor destroyed. If shahajahan's voice is recorded, its hundreds year old. If any atom, electron, proton contains that energy then it gives out energy and electrons move from one orbit to another. So even atom can not hold the energy for 100s of years. However it is possible to retrieve these voices/conversation but you will have to find out energy converted from voice. Nobody knows where that energy is.......

i find that it is unbelivable for channel like ndtv to spread rumours all around... but my view has all changed ... to enhance trp's ndtv is becoming like ibn 7 .. and india tv .... very soon you would also get to hear or read about ghosts whisperes and snake charmers ...... i feel that ndtv should maintain it 's own class and niche ... and should avoid such cheap ... unusal... and wierd stuff

Hi All, I belive this story and I want to buy this software now!!!!!

NDTV Posted By Trideep Nath-Tuesday, June 19, 2007
May be possible but really unrealistic when it says sound recorded long time back in history. Atoms are recorded - Re-recorded continously so how come it is possible for the wall to retain what Shah jahan said to Noor jahan 4 or 5 centuries back. HA Ha HA

NDTV Posted By BugsKiller-Friday, June 15, 2007
I believe this "story". This maybe true in near future. Some people couldn’t imagine Cloning was true. Some people couldn’t believe that cybertronics/cybergenetics was true. Not believing was the reason why Galileo was killed. For some world was flat. Everything is possible in distant future.

NDTV Posted By Sathyameva-jayathe-Friday, May 11, 2007
Its as much true as H.G.Wells "time machine" one could go back in time, hypothetically correct ,but practically "stupid"

I would agree with all the above gentlemen...

NDTV Posted By Balmiki-Thursday, April 12, 2007
This is quite stupid.I mean if we are to extend our imagination to such extents,we may think of something that will pass on sounds to us from the adjacent room, even if spoken at a very low volume or if the room is sound proof. But extracting informations from stone walls!Specially if the words are around 400 years old.Consider the natural forces(rain, winds, storms etc)that has hit the walls. If speech can create patterns on stones,so can they.No one can extract information from walls and generate speech except for the following...GOD,characters from Marvel Comics and a Time traveller.Atoms are not database repositories.

The theory is absoluted malformed. It is not possible even thought it may be possible but not the way it is explained. It should have been told in much better way to fool the people. Its an April fool joke... :)

NDTV Posted By Vikas-Friday, April 06, 2007
This is reason why media is so popular in india because anyone can make fool out of us.

NDTV Posted By sridhar mohan-Thursday, April 05, 2007
it is absolutely ridiculous...if electrons are moving every where then what is mean by conductor and non conductor(insulator)......

NDTV Posted By Ramkumar-Thursday, April 05, 2007
April fool or not..it is absolutely ridiculous..atoms are held up by strong covalent bonds that cannot be disturbed by a simple sound signal..electrons are held up in their orbits because of their strong attractive force to the nucleus and protons cant be disturbed either because they are in the nucleus.. if voice can cause disturbance then everything solid around us would tear down as we speak..!!!

NDTV Posted By Sridhar-Thursday, April 05, 2007
April Fool!!!!

NDTV Posted By mahesh-Wednesday, April 04, 2007
i have a question.....are the voices recorded in some kind of database that says whose voice it is,at what date and time was it said...the storage capacity is amazing isnt it... heheheheheheheheeheheheheh watta story ...lol

NDTV Posted By sinha-Wednesday, April 04, 2007
good but difficult to believe.....a story cooked beautifully and technically from a popular hindi saying"deewaron k bhi kaan hote hain" anyways...good effort NDTV

NDTV Posted By Vikram-Wednesday, April 04, 2007
How can it be that this news was not flashed by BBC & only NDTV. This is all to just popularise the news channel. It is also mentioned that the technology will be available 12 months from now means again being ready to get fooled next year.

NDTV Posted By sudeeeep-Wednesday, April 04, 2007
it ws a april fool news but the technology seems possible energy in a system is constant. Energy is neither created or destroyed but only changes form (transforms). sound is also an energy. its not lost. it has changed form. this energy is not consumed only by the walls but is distributed among many elemensts around. but i think it is very difficult to extract data from all these elements.

NDTV Posted By chaitanya-Wednesday, April 04, 2007
haha ya ya.. it ws a april fool news..... rather they want us to get fooled for the complete year till next 1st april haha

NDTV Posted By Tom-Tuesday, April 03, 2007
I also read another article about this technology where they actually replayed the sound of someone cooking up a big crock of shit.

NDTV Posted By Manish Bora-Tuesday, April 03, 2007
Hey dont forget dat 17 years and 255 crores have been invested. If this is TRUE believe me. All political scams would get unearthed and Truth will be revealed.there would be nothing as such ..Hidden. Totally Transparent..Be Optimistic. Even if its a Joke.

It clearly mentions that the names will be published exactly 12 months....i.e. April 1st of 2008....So its a combo pack of fooling people....april 1st of 2007 and 2008....

NDTV Posted By Rayendran Jamani-Tuesday, April 03, 2007
The technology seems definitely possible. However, extracting historical conversations before the technology was invented is a tall story! The walls have no way of recording this information without help, from say, software. Well, unless, Shah Jahan also had software developers at work!!

NDTV Posted By chandra sekhar-Tuesday, April 03, 2007
Humm... Hats off to all and NDTV for such a exciting story.... Lets take it as a story and nothing more than that.

Fantastic. If what Aurangzeb said so many years ago at the red fort is classified , then how does one accept that this tech is really possible. how does this affect the national security or whatever .

NDTV Posted By Rohit-Sunday, April 01, 2007
Lets hope that inspite of the big money that US and UK ppl wud like to pay, the invention would be used for Indians only. ATM machine which was invented by an Indian was sold for $1 million to some US bank which profitted $800 million-not sure of figures.. And we all think that most inventions come from West.

NDTV Posted By shabeer-Sunday, April 01, 2007
excellent, great effort by those involved. if possible can v have a demo or a sample of those like red fort walls what stored years before
