Taliban style vigilantism is visible on the streets of the Pakistani capital Islamabad and it is getting shriller.

A day after women students from the Jamia Hafsa madarsa raided a nearby brothel and kidnapped its owner and two of her relatives they were joined by their male counterparts.

They detained two policemen when the authorities tried to take action and are warning of more trouble.

Hundreds of pro-Taliban students took to the streets demanding brothels, video parlours and all symbols of anything un-Islamic be shutdown.

"Our demand is that the government should take stern action against that prostitute. If the government fails then definitely the action the students have taken will be repeated, because Islam teaches us that wherever you see any sinful activity you should first try to stop it with your hands," said Abdul Rashid Ghazi, a cleric.

The Jamia Hafsa School has been a problem for President Pervez Musharraf ever since armed students clashed with police in attempts to investigate them after the July 2005 bombings in London.

Till now such protests had been restricted to the tribal areas and the North West Frontier Provinces.

Video and CD shops have been attacked and closed, barbers are banned from shaving beards and non-religious music and singing is prohibited.

Many believe this signifies that President Musharraf could well be facing new demons at home.
