Addressing a huge gathering of clerics and followers of the Deoband seminary at Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh, Home Minister P Chidambaram said, "We cannot view Islam as an alien faith. All Indians share a cause to fight communalism". Stressing that pluralism should be the basis of our strength, the Home Minister condemned Communalism and urged the Muslim leaders to help foster the concept of civil society.
About 10,000 clerics, besides five lakh followers of Jamiat, are attending the conference. The presence of the home minister at the gathering is being seen as an attempt by the UPA to reach out to Islamic scholars and seek their support in the war against terror.
The Jamiat meet is taking place in the backdrop of a series of conferences of Islamic scholars of different schools and activists explaining why Islam and terror of the jihadi brand were mutually exclusive. Along with Chidambaram, Baba Ram Dev & Sri Sri Ravi Shankar are expected to address the gathering. Can spiritual leaders bridge the Hindu-Muslim divide? Join the debate on Verdict.

If the spiritual leaders (not just one or a few, ALL of them) unite, the people who follow them are bound to unite as well.

Indeed neither Islam,Hindu nor any other religion says to become a disturbing factor to human kind. They even can't say to become a religious fanatic. They say to become a good human being and to build an ideal civic society. After all,all die at some time, what is the use of intermediary things to such a level that one should become a terrorist or extremist in the name of religion.

Spiritual leaders do have a role to play but ultimately it is the mutual trust between the two communities which cements relations.

Dear Sir: Unless spiritual leaders dont leave thier religion back home, one cannot hope for a bridge to be built at anytime.

Hindu Muslim Divide is a historical truth which will not hide if it is suppressed.Ulemma and Clerics who are powerful still in Islam are opposing even a slightest reform in Muslims.Hindus and Christians will not bother or follow the opinions of their religious leaders in worldly affairs normally.

If demagogues could teach brotherhood, nothing better than that.

"It's not how to bridge by wiping out all differences, but how to bridge with all the differences intact"- a difficult task but our spiritual leaders, scholars, clerics with receptive and appreciation to each others community and mutual give and take, can strengthen Hindu-Muslim unity. In the best sense of humanity and nationalism, our spiritual leaders can manifest and free of any racial or religious prejudice. Sharing the same cultural and historical complex, spiritual leaders, are the rightful catalysts to strengthen the two communities as equal partners in India's development.
