At a time when there is talk of increasing representation among Muslim women to give them a more decisive voice, the country's largest Islamic seminary, Darul Uloom is still caught up in a debate over the burqa.
A recent acceptance by them now permits women to remove their veil when in all-women classrooms, but not in public. The announcement came even as top Indian clerics debated the recent ban clamped by Cairo’s Al-Azhar University on wearing the niqab (veil) on its women campuses.
Since the Quran does not clearly outline a dress code for women- except calling upon both men and women to "dress modestly"- Islamic scholars have often expressed varying views on how much of a woman's body should be covered.
Does banning the burqa in women's universities represent a change in Islamic religious thinking? Join the debate on Verdict.
