Shows    »   The Big Fight    »  An undivided India?

Vikram Chandra Looking beyond the issue of who was responsible for the Partition, the question we are asking this week is, “Would we have been better off without Partition?"

On one hand there was the unprecedented tragedy of partition on the basis of the two-nation theory. Almost a million lives were lost and millions of others were displaced from their homes. On the other hand, would an undivided India have gone into a spiral of communal violence and secessionist movements, eventually leading to the balkanisation of the country?

As far as Pakistan and Bangladesh are concerned, would they have been better off enjoying the fruits of a fully functional democracy instead of military dictatorships running them? Or for that matter are all those Muslims who migrated to Pakistan from India really better off, as they continue to claim that they are treated as "second class citizens."
