Sonia Singh Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan was stopped and questioned at Newark airport for about two hours on Saturday and was released only after the Indian consulate intervened. The actor said he was told he had a "common name" and hence the questioning was required.

This is not the first time racial profiling has troubled Indians travelling to the US. Former President A P J Abdul Kalam was recently frisked by Continental Airlines, citing security reasons. Kamal Hassan was detained at the Toronto airport in Canada for his "Islamic" last name. That same year Aamir Khan was strip-searched and interrogated at the Chicago airport. Southern super star Mammooty was detained earlier this year because his name on the passport was Muhammad Kutty Ismail.
