In the season's heaviest rains on Tuesday afternoon, Mumbai experienced three hours of chaos. The sea swelled in high tide; Mithi river crossed the danger mark and all modes of transport came to a standstill. A large part of Mumbai's suburbs was pushing through water especially in low-lying areas, subways, under flyovers and main arteries that connect suburbs to the island city. Worst affected were the people of the slums that are always the first to get flooded. But is the local administration doing enough?
While the city has spent millions on its drainage system since 2005, this time the situation looks no better. The BMC has admitted that the city cannot be said to be ‘flood proof’. So, as rain continues to batter Mumbai, what's in store this time?
