The ‘Varun effect’, the mid-campaign projection of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as a prime ministerial candidate, the negative campaign against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and the public spat between BJP leaders led voters to believe that the party was not focussed enough on addressing the needs of a democracy.
The challenge for the BJP now is to come up with a positive, progressive and inclusive agenda. Mere jingoism and lack of substance will no longer work.
