Railway budget: Mumbai's wish list for Lalu
Prachi Jawadekar Wagh
Friday, February 13, 2009, (Mumbai)
Railway budget: MumbaiMumbai's local trains, the city's lifeline, continue to burst at the seams. As frustration builds up, there have already been signs of revolt, witnessed in a sudden protest last week. But it's a growing resentment, coming from promises unkept.

People want more trains, better services, which they say eludes the city as the Interim Railway Budget is presented on Friday.

Mumbaikars remain pessimistic, believing that their daily commute will remain just as difficult.

Mumbai wants a local train system that does not fail it, which the people can use with comfort.

So when Lalu Prasad Yadav presents the vote on account, he will be burdened with high hopes and pent up anger.

The kind that led to an impromptu protest in Borivili last week after trains were delayed and cancelled.

"Borivali was just a trailor. If they don't mend their ways soon, they will see that same thing on the
Central Railway. This is a warning," said Subhash Gupta, President, Mumbai Yatri Sangh.

Last year's budget promised additional train lines between:

  • Mumbai Central and Borivali on Western Railway
  • CST and Kurla on Central Railway
  • It also budgeted for 156 new rakes

While work on additional lines is still to start, the new rakes failed to bring major improvements due to technical problems.

"The rakes are facing teething troubles. We are rectifying it," said Shyam Sundar Gupta, CPRO, Werstern Railway.

These unfulfilled promises have left most Mumbaikars pessimistic.

I don't think anything will change. This is Mumbai, we have to live with it.

Frequency, more trains, frequency. One demand year after year. Mumbaikars dont' want new promises. All they want is old promises to be fulfilled.

In a few years from now this whole thing of a socalled 'success' will be exposed for what it is worth. How much is going into the renewal fund of hte railways - this is a farce.

services have not improved.cleaniness in compartments inc. toilets are worst. availability of water is another problem. Only timings & getting reservation have improved. Attendents do not bother about A/c & food quality. No accountability.

BULLET TRAIN AS ANNOUNCED IN PARLIAMENT, EITHER IS A PUBLICITY STUNT OR THE RLY AUTHORITY DON'T HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE OF THEIR OWN INFRASTRUCTURE. IF THE ACTUAL WORKS STARTS TODAY, IT WILL TAKE AT LEAST 10 YRS TO RUN ON INDIAN SOIL.

He should have used the huge surplus to make better coaches as the toilets are stinking now also and the floors and platforms are so dirty.

    DEAR SIR/MADAM:

I really appreciate some of the actions of our beloved Shri. Lalu Prasad Yadav, RAILWAY MINISTER like opitmum uitlization of available seats to be alloted to passengers willing to be upgraded to First class or AC Chair car.

BUt by selling GOVT land or giving it on lease of 99 years to for HOTELS near RLY stations, cannot be termed as success story.
Accountability of each and every RLY employee has to increase.

Passenger safety and luggage safety has to be world class. Merely doing feasibility studies for bullet trains is not sufficeint.

Cleanliness in trains. Steps to avoid overcrowding at RLY platforms and issue of on the spot tickets, should be accorded priority.

Ticket less travelling public should be given rigorious punishment.

Travelling should be made comfortable and pleasant experience for Indian as well as tourist.

MOVIES ON DEMAND ON LONG DISTANCE TRAINS.

KALKA SHIMLA PALACE ON WHEELS SHOULD BE STARTED WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT.

    MORE PALACE ON WHEELS.

    Thanks. JAI HIND.

Few days before in the trivandrum railway station while i was getting out of the train, i had fell down in between the train and platform, becouse of bad condition of steps and train there was large space between train and platform. It did not injured me much becouse the train was not moving. I think railway should make more effort to improve safty of passengers.

We keeping hearing about success story of the Indian Railways and about the greatness of the Railway minister. But have our railways become safer? Do they run on time? Have the conditions of commuters improved especially in city like Mumbai where the local railway is the lifeline? Have they become cleaner? How do they compared to other developing/ developed nations? If the answers are in the negative- which they are, Our Railways are a failure.

Financial jugglary or not, it has to be realised that all the PSUs whether railways, Roadways, Govt. Airlines, orDepartment of posts , can be made to generate profits if managed properly. It shows that the Indian Goverment was sleeping till now on a gold mine which could turn around long back and needed good management. I am of the opinion that the Goverment too need professionals now, educated people should only be allowed to contest elections, peoples representatives in Govt. with crimnal backgrownds should be barred from contesting elections Accountability should be fixed for goverment functioneries who hold public office.
