NDTV
Barkha Dutt The recent fatwa against the singing of 'Vande Mataram' has re-ignited an age-old debate about the acceptance of Vande Mataram as our national song by the Muslim community.

The fresh fatwa is not without history. In 2006, the BJP had asked all schools and educational institutions to sing the national song on the occasion of 125 years of the song's creation. They were opposed by the clerics, who later issued a fatwa against the singing of the song.

On the other side of the debate are prominent Muslims who say they do not find the song provocative as the stanzas that were against Muslims have been eliminated by the Congress Working Committee way back in 1937.

Is this fresh fatwa then, a non-issue? Should the clerics focus more on the development of the minority community rather than involving themselves in petty divisive politics for the votebank? Is the singing of Vande Mataram a litmus test of our patriotism?
What's your take?

As india is a multi religion country, and as Bande Mataram is hurting one religion, then it should be stoped here and take our multi religion country forward without any controversy.

Everybody knows the opposition of Muslims about singing of vande Matram, then the fresh fatwa seems to be a non-issue. Once the hot debate has been ignited on this old age issue. We are a democratic state, let us discussed on objectionable stanza of the song and make the song acceptable to all and eliminated this controversial issue once for all. I request to leaders of muslim community please focus on development of community rather then playing in the hands of politics.

well, these fanatics should understand that muslim in the whole country had never objected singing Jana, gana----- simply because it never contradicted the fundamental believe of islam. But if muslims oppose to sing Vande.... we the so called patriotic must try to understand, discuss and debate before making mandatory to everyone. This is because if i don't recite it from my heart and soul but just because of manadtor reason, then i think the goal of igniting patriotism gets failed. Is not it?

Patriotism has to be transcended to facilitate formation of World Government. Hence, idealizing Patriotism is retrograde

Vande Matram has been appropriately modified to look into concerns of Muslim Beleif but its high time muslim community realise that fatwa against women empowerement, regarding AIds etc are outdated and regressive and society and community need to evlove. Paksiten is an example of religion and policits mix gone terribly wrong, so lets learn and respect about Indias plurality and enrich it further..Jai Hind Saurabh Copenhagen Denmark

National song should not be based on hurting the religious sentiments of any society of the nation.

Let me begin with 2006 before i comment, in your small note you have categarically mentioned that Vande Mataram is a National Song now coming to the point they i.e BJP had asked educational institution to sing the song as a mark of respect on a particular day that had signifance (125 years of song creation)mind it they didnot say it is compulsory to sing the song every day so what is the harm in that are we ashamed to sing our National Song. Now coming to the scond point the stanzas that were against Muslims had been eliminated by the Congress Working Committee way back in 1937.So why there was a need to issue the fatwa or highlight the song when there was such a big gathering.
I dont believe in dragging the matter b'cos i dont believe in petty politics specially divisive politics i really pray and hope that every body just dumps this majority and minority ,backward caste upper caste issues and move on every body should just think they are proud citizens of India and the one thing that should be at the top of everybody's mind should be as a citizen of India what is the contribution/difference that i can make towards the progress of my country.

So according to me it is a total non-issue not worth debating as there would be nothing constructive only destructive thoughts will come out of this topic.

I think VANDAY MATRAM -recent fatwa/resolution by some in meeting(even our HOME MINISTER too was presnt)became an important issue for DEBATE.
OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM AND SONG were penned by two well respected bengalis (one was noble peace awardee too)these two were accepted before our independance by all be remebered -(majahb nahi sikha tha) -to respect & love of NATION is the first duty ALL with one voice SHOULD CONDEMN the FATWA and the designers of it should be PUNISHED too-to me they R not BHARATIYAs.

We've got the national anthem to show our patriotism, anything else should be made strictly optional. Real patriotism comes from accepting and accommodating to who we are as a nation. It lies in working for the betterment of the whole country (minorities and majorities included). We seriously need to move beyond these petty issues and debate on matters like the environment , poverty or even corruption.
