Vikram Chandra It has been 25 years since prime minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated on Oct 31, 1984. Events of those days are still fresh in memory. Gandhi's assassination was followed by the anti-Sikh riots. By the time calm was restored, tens of thousands of homes and businesses were destroyed.

There were no 24x7 news channels at that time and the media by and large went by the official line on the carnage. The government had enforced a total media blackout and stopped local and international media from covering the tragic blood shed of the decade. Had the news channels been there, would it have been possible for the government to stay inactive and not take action against the perpetrators?

The 2002 Gujarat riots in contrast took place in the full glare of 24x7 news channels, prompting human rights activists to prod both the judiciary as well as public conscience.

Can the media through its 24-hour coverage help prevent massive communal riots? Inspite of the critical role played by the media, is it still largely ignored and bypassed by politicians?

TV Media can serve as a strong deterrent but the perpetrators of communal violence will be forced to drop their agenda only if the masses repeatedly vote for a progressive and united country.

Riots take place when differences of some sort exist, lets sort those differences out like civilized humans should do

The partition of Yugoslavia in the 1990s is testimony that even in a world of twenty four hour news such as CNN did not stop the killings for example in Srebrenica in 1994 in which some 8,000 Muslim males were killed. This happening in a continent that only fifty-years prior had witness the mass killings of the Jews by Hitler. So mass media does not stop anything. The Gujarat genocide of 2002 is testimony that killings of even media personal took place so who is going to report what is happening.

The secular press, secular elite of India, media and secular parties of India do not want uniform civil code and uniform population code though recommended by supreme court. They provide lip service to secularism. In fact they want to cater to the vote banks to come to power. Singapore has uniform civil code. Indian does not want to track teh population of Indians and how can they control riots. Just for wasting time, the media brings such wasteful discussions instead of supporting uniform civil code and population code like CHINA AND SINGAPORE.

teh secular people in India do not want a uniform civil code. The supreme court advise is not followed by secualr parties, the media and secularist citizens. Hence the problem continues. Some religions in India ( from foreign) do not want to follow government advise of population control and hence the problem of communal violance

It is all very well to sit here after twenty five years and say that the Anti-Sikh Genocide was a bad thing, (And It Was) but lets be honest this was supported at the time. The mainstream press mainly the newspapers and magazines, and the state run television more or less gave a green light to this type of action simply because we have to look at the political situation at the time which caught the Sikhs in this trap. Personally this genocide and the subsequent cover ups give fuel to a separate homeland.

nothing is related to tv media ..we the people create communal tension and it is we the people who can stop this tension...everything is dependent on us

There is absolutely no way to stop this mad communal riots unless the the govts/political parties and public make it one point agenda to fight this menace.

Thanks God, media and judiciary are playing their critical role nowadays but still it is ignore by politician due to lack of moral values.

we can't say that riots would not happen but media can play a major role in minimizing it
