Vikram Chandra The Supreme Court on Thursday entertained an appeal against the recent path-breaking Delhi High Court judgment which said that gay sex should not be treated as a crime.

In a petition to the court, Suresh Kumar Kaushal, an astrologer, said India's ancient scriptures and values did not permit homosexuality and argued that the recent judgement would lead to the spread of HIV and AIDS.

Last week's ruling by the Delhi high court was widely hailed by India's gay community and rights activists who said it would protect them from harassment and persecution. Religious groups however, vehemently opposed the move, describing homosexuality as "unnatural."
