Hours after a group of armed men mounted a series of coordinated attacks on Mumbai, leaving more than 125 people dead, it has become painfully apparent that this country is woefully unprepared for terrorist attacks of this type.

Many are calling it India's 9/11 that has driven home the brutal reality of the global jihad coming to India.

Politicians are out with lengthy speeches on what should have been and what is but we don’t seem to be getting any better at pre-empting attacks or punishing those responsible.

Brave officers are lost to frontal assaults and political posturing over terror follows. But stifled as it were in between the chaos of death, fear and blame is the voice of the masses.

A secular, inclusive India with modern infrastructure to fight terror is the need of the hour. It’s time YOU take control and define what it takes to fight terror. Write in with your solutions.

naresh m , bangalore :

To fight against this terror and religiousness at least in the coming generation we should inculcate the feeling of oneness in the students i.e we should remove the caste/religion column from the educational forms .
We should believe that INDIA is our religion.

KOUSTUV DEY , KOLKATA :

26/11---India’s first URBAN WAR FRONT have had a very deep psychological impact on all the Indians. More than anything else 26/11 has exposed the way we are being governed. Seemingly, amid all the politician bashing and anger and hatred, the broader perspective has not being lost. Just modernizing the security & police forces is certainly not enough. THE NATION NEED TO BE REBULID. And this is the time, as the nation is showing from different quarters the spirit of solidarity and the urgency of reforming our systems & processes. We need to remember that our politicians are as bad(or as good) as we are. Terrorism threat for us is both internal & external. True, to a large extent if not fully, our external terrorist threats & actions are caused by the vested interests of Pakistan, but what about the severe unrest and violent movements in different parts of our country. The single important cause of today’s violent unrest is : we donot have LEADERS. And to fight terror & rebuild our nation by incorporationg objective & intelligent reforms the following suggestions are given : 1) Let the the option of “NONE OF THE ABOVE” in the candidature list of all the different types of elections be incorporated immediately,i.e.if any of the voter do not intend to vote for any of the candidates then he/she can vote for “none of the above option”. In the most likely event(as things stand today) of ‘none of the above option’ getting the largest no. of votes, the election of that particular constituency be cancelled and a new election date be arranged. The cost/expenses to be incurred for the reelection of that constituency to be bear/paid by the parties/independent candidates who appeared as candidate of the cancelled election. 2) The eligibility criteria of candidates seeking election be made more strict with an eye on the fact that people with criminal & corruption records cannot stand for any election whatsoever. 3) A maximum limit of two terms be fixed for an elected representative to stand in a particular type of election. After two terms he may stand for a higher level or for a lower level of election.4)Parties to take an oath that while selecting a candidate for a particular constituency no consideration would be made on ground of religion or cast & under the strict vigil and monitoring of the Election Commission the same to be followed. 5) A National Anti Corruption Commission be set up operating at the central, state & district levels wherein any corruption related complaint be lodged by the complainant himself against any public servant/dept/organization. 6) The concerned executive machineries to take immediate care of the hitherto poorly developed and underdeveloped parts of our country(like the north eastern states). The fruits of growth & development to reach equally. We need to remember that there can be moral validity of the various extremist movements that are taking place in our country unlike that in the case of the jehadis. 7) A fund to be created with contribution from the corporates & individuals that would be utilized on a yearly basis to honour the best elected representative right from the panchayet level to the loksabha level, based on performance. 8) The existing judicial process need to be relooked with primary focus on the process of appointment of judges and filling up of the vacant positions. 9) There need to be an integration of the different educational boards of the country so as to ensure the implementation of unity in diversity aspect. At the primary level irrespective of religion, language, cast, etc. we must have a common & compulsory syllabus across the country with key focus on learning together the glorious past of the nation so as to ensure that the process of growing up as PROUD INDIANS is initiated at an early age.

Ghulam Ali , Dubai :

Grief, panic, anger and most importantly loss of life innocent ones. Its time We Indians stood up changed our political system, have transparency. It is now all the more necessary that we elect the right people for the right jobs. More importantly we upgrade our police force with latest technologies which would hand the police more options to deal with terrorism themselves rather than wait for an action after the attacks. Clearly the world was watching and so was I and it is so pathetic to see that our police force is so outdated with weapons and technology..

P Srinivasa Rao , Dubai UAE :

It's a massive shame to the Nation that we are unable to tackle the continuous terrorist strikes that's happening for the last few years. The main culprit is our Vote Bank Politics and carelessness of our political leaders irrerspective of any party. It's not intelligence failure as such but it's a failure of our so called leaders to take on action in a right time. Our leaders worries much of their vote banks rather than worrying for safety & security of country. They are scared to take any action on suspects or terrorists caught as they may loose their traditional votes. This type of vested interest politics should come to end to prevent terrorism from Indian soils.

vinay kulshreshtha , vellore :

first things must be first..After all its all about the integrity, unity and security of the country. the terrorists always hit where it hurts the most and that is the unity of the country so we as indian, our first and for most responsibility is that we do not loose our patience and show them(the terrorist) that our unity is intact.
2nd thing:- all those political leaders who keep passing the blame from one politician to another, do they do not know that they will be leader only if some one is there to follow them, so they should rather passing on the blames, come out with some strong opinion at least ..
3rd:- none of the politician have faced he people since mumbai went off burning, so how these same politicians can face the public for vote, because polls are due on april -may..
4th:-why india cant have a zero tolerance policy at least against a henous crime like terrorism.
5:-why is it that we even after suffering from terrorism for the past 40 yrs don`t have a policy to fight against terrorism.
6:-all the politicians must remember that terrorism is like cancer that will ultimately kills the country if not cured at time..
7:-above all political party . above all politicial intentions and above all other things is the pride of nation..the nation is above all other things. its not about BJP or the CONGRESS..its about INDIA...SAVE IT

Pradumnya , Mangalore :

Restrain political leaders from making comments that hurt the sentiments of communities. Punish organizations that create hatred amongst people based on relegion, caste, region, language etc.And start a process of reconciliation. Then only we will stand united as a nation and no terrorist will dare come close.

shibu , trivandrum :

i dont agree with waheedaji that all terrorist are muslims .it was proven inthe malegav incidents.thre are elements in all communities.what we should do is to identify them and isolate them.if security is neede we have totake everybody into confidence.we should also cast away the politicians who divide and rule.let india unite fight against all oppressors whatever religion they are.finally i would like to disagree with javed that minority should only based on financial situation

Anilson , Kuwait :

This is a defining moment for India. It’s a wakeup call. India is growing and many don’t want India to be a strong nation, they will do all these cowardice to humiliate and hurt India. Let us all stop the blame game and be a part of nation building. Let’s choose to become leaders and give our voters the right option for a leader, let’s go and vote for change. Lets become strong and confident generation. Let’s join hands to make India a super power where no one dares to think of such an act. Let be more humane and friendly with each others, let’s not forget our family values, let’s work hard and not be casual about things around us. Let’s participate. Let’s be open minded and learn from our failures rather than denying them. Be proud of our heritage, values and diversity. Let’s make our diversity an advantage. Let’s learn things in deep. Let’s try to know about other religions, other cultures, states, festivals, languages. Let’s bring those to public scrutiny who divide us on these grounds. By doing all these we will be a wonderful, powerful nation. I salute my fellow countrymen who are doing all these and urge all those ignorant ones to join hands and make INDIA untouchable to the cowards. We are Incredible Indians and we can make it Incredible India.

Siddharth Agrawal , Mumbai :

This outburst of the extremist fundamentalism is here to stay and we cannot wish it away but only keep it under control.

Every individual is a part of this and no single government, organization or institution can ever safeguard us against such incidents.

It is upon us to be honest and ask ourselves at every step that are we being cautious enough in our own capacity, are we being responsible citizens when we let a begging child starve or walk up to him and feed him - because mind you - this beggar child will want to tomorrow get up and shoot you down - if his feelings were wrongly channelized.

The idea is that the we at large are responsible for creating a deep sense of hatred for us, amongst us and by us and it is now upon us to reverse it.
12/7/2008 11:18:10 AM

govind dugrakoti , varanasi :

we should not look at politicians now,we must cooperate to oyr security system, information fron 1billion people can show their roots, this is the time to destroy them, and also take those people together who are misguided by such elements, for sleeping cells we must active cells to inact their power,we should be watchful now. we are not indian army, but we are indians so half part is to be done by us.we will provide information they will react.
