As India waits for a formal reply from Pakistan on the Mumbai dossier, a top Pakistani diplomat, their envoy to the UK, has told NDTV that Islamabad's probe has found that Pakistani territory was not used.
"Pakistani territory was not used so far as the investigators have made their conclusions. Pakistan territory not used. It could have been some other place. Not the UK as well. Because these were the two places I was concerned about. They categorically informed me that UK was not involved. Pakistan was not involved. Its territories were not used for planning this operation," said Wajid Shamshul Hasan, Pakistan High Commissioner to UK.
However, hours later, speaking to NDTV in Davos, Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani ticked off his high commissioner saying the envoy has no authority to comment on the matter.
"How can he comment? We can't right now. If the PM cannot comment then how could he? It is only the job of the interior ministry. I assure you that my soil will not be used for terrorism and if anyone is found guilt the law will take its own course," said Gilani.
As Delhi still waits for an official reply from Islamabad, these comments have drawn a sharp reaction from External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee.
And with growing confusion over what the official Pakistani response could be, it is clear that expectations of a substantial and honest one are growing dim, because it would mean revealing the links between the ISI and the Lashkar-e-Toiba.
