Pakistan said that the suspected terrorist outfit Jamaat-ud-Dawa could be banned on the request of the UN Security Council. The Jamaat-ud-Dawa is believed to be the front for the Laskhar-e-Toiba, the group behind the Mumbai terror attacks.

Pakistan's Permanent representative to the United natuons, Hussain Haroon said that the group could be banned if United Nations makes a request.

He added that Jamaat's bank accounts could also be frozen.

Haroon said that Pakistan and India could join hand to curb terrorism and this is going to prove an attempt in this regard.

Pakistan's action comes after Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahmad spoke at the UN making it clear that the Jamaat-ud-Dawa and other such organisations need to be banned and effective sanctions imposed.

Meanwhile, there are some reactions from Lashkar-e-Toiba on arrest of at least 20 Jamaat-ud-Dawa activists, including the alleged mastermind of the Mumbai terror attacks, near Muzzaffarabad.

A Lashkar fighter told the Washington Post that the arrests will not stop the militant group from continuing with its activities.

He said the group has "huge strength" and is concentrated in Pakistan's tribal areas on the border with Afghanistan.

"We are still well-organized and active," the paper quoted the militant as saying during an interaction at a safe house near Lahore.

India asks UN to step in

India has asked the United Nations to ban the Lashkar-e-Toiba's front group, the Jammat-Ud-Dawa and to send Pakistan a strong message that terrorists should not be given sanctuary.

Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahmad spoke at the UN and said, "The Jamaat-ud-Dawa and other such organizations need to be banned and effective sanctions imposed."

He also added that their country of origin needs to take urgent steps to stop their functioning.

"A message must also go out that perpetrators of terrorist acts must be brought to book and not given sanctuaries in some states. Nexus between State, terror outfits must be broken," he said.
