Political slogans often outpace reality. Amidst the usual din of desperation in Indian politics, the only voice that can rise above all, with much clarity, is that of people’s power- YOU. For in one silent, secret moment before a ballot box, you can write the fate of kings and pretenders. But for most part, the noise prevails.

Cutting through this noise, what does it really mean to be ‘Independent’?

Is Independence about celebrating a day in the year, grasping little tri coloured flags, pronouncing aloud that we are ‘Indians’? Or is it about learning from past mistakes and making our leaders accountable for the polity and the society we live in?...

Yes, it is about questioning the rationale behind policies and prerogatives all in the interest of the nation; yet, is it only that? Isn't it also about 'being the change' amidst the baffling complexities that engulf a billion people kingdom, that's defined by diversity- what we call 'India'?

In every democracy, there lies a method to the political and social chaos and conflict. And it is through this chaos, that the future of a democracy gets etched. Governments are voted in and out of power and the social fabric undergoes a transformation each time.

As India turns 62, it is the best time for retrospect...where we slid and where we succeeded. Take a look at the defining moments, and the leaders whose voice and vision shaped modern India.

Much before you cast your ballot, we've thrown open a platform where you get to rate the promises, the fallouts, the pride and the disappointments of India.

And while you're at it- also suggest the way forward with an Indian, truly unstoppable in your eyes.

So, bring on the bouquets and brickbats for the best and worst of India as we celebrate a nation, an empire, where no principle is sacred, no leader indispensable and every alliance negotiable and more than anything else, a country where democracy rules. Or doesn't it?

raj, brisbane : India still has a long way to go.Politics is the only hindrance India has in between Success and failure.
thaker.arvind, rajkot : Narendra Modi he is the only leader else are politician determination, growth oriented, fearless, administrative power, and more important ready to face whatever outcomes once decide determined to protect citizens against internal and external threat
jasjeetsingh, new delhi : leader should be strong who can handle any sitaution.
yogendra sood, new delhi : Narendera Modi - the only fit man to lead the nation in the present uncertainities.
Karthikeyan.R, Bangalore : LK Advani in terms of Leadership Quality.Age also plays a role in efficient governance. He is Decisive. He will hold the democracy.I hope so.
B K CHOWLA, gurgaon : Of late one is getting feeling of discomfort, with the happenings at the poltical level.Perhaps, a man like Arun Jaitly Or Narinder Modi could lead this country. Both have a clean record,no corruption cases yet, acceptable generally to all speak good Hindi and English. You must read this in good spirit as i know neither of them
Anita Vinod, Thrissur, Kerala : In order to lead the country, one has to have absolute passion to see it at the top, to see its people happy and prospering, to see its children safe, healthy and cheerful, to see that every citizen feels proud of their country. I ve seen that passion only in strong personalities like Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam and of course, Kiran Bedi, apart from our illustrious freedom fighters. We need a leader, no sorry, leaders with passionate vision and then, a dynamism with which they can carry out duties to make the vision a reality. These two leaders not only have these qualities, they also BELIEVE that we can do it...they have complete faith in India and the Indians. They only require us to do our duties with sincerity and selfless dedication.
Thomas Vergis, Muscat, Sultanate of Oman : The young and the old are now marching together for growth and change. The Congress with Manmohan Singh, Chidambaram, Lallu Yadav etc are blazing the trail for others to follow. It must be carried forward. The leaders must have impeccable characters in all aspects. Always have a balanced approach. Give critical support across faiths, age and alliances. Make things work which should be our strategy. As Indians We should be proud to be the citizens and we are part of the majority world. Be courageous and lead without compromising on human principles. Let us also pray to the Almighty to guide us in our strive towards balanced growth especially in the alleviation of Poverty.
Mahesh Srinivasan, Manc hester, UK : The Late British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill, was asked by an interviewer, the difference between a politician and a Statesman. He replied, " A politician always has the next election in his mind. But a statesman has the next generation in his mind." In other words, a country needs a leader who has the next generation's welfare in mind. India does not and will not have any statesmen.
Rajesh Grandhi, Guntur : Abdul Kalam....One of my favorites...
