While there are standard policies and legislations to promote equal employment opportunity for persons with disabilities, an inclusive culture can only be created where there is truly an open-mindedness and in-depth knowledge of the working capacity of the disabled. Some companies may not meet the ‘legal’ requirement or have a comprehensive framework of inclusion policies but are thoughtful, respectful and above all, enthusiastic in diversity work. More importantly they have made inclusion an ongoing process of learning rather than something people with disabilities can do "right". A eminent non profit Enable India with BCF conducted the review process supported by Enable India’s vision of ‘working for economic independence and dignity of persons with disabilities.”The award process for the Inclusion and Diversity awards were:
Step 1: Identify potential nominees:
Based on the parameters of employment of people with disabilities in the private sector 30 companies were identified as potential nominees. Based on the response from them 16 were shortlisted.
Step 2: Shortlisting of finalists:
Parameters of the Inclusion and Diversity survey
The questionnaires were sent to all the shortlisted 16 organizations.
The intent of the questionnaire was to measure, qualitative and to only to some degree the quantitative inclusion of people with disabilities in their organization ‘culture.’ Qualitative parameters were judged by the types of disability for e.g whether it was severe disability and if the more challenging disabilities like mental illness or cerebral palsy had also been included. This was followed by the range of barriers and enablers in the built environment to create a successful employment experience. The questions were graded according to weightage of the element of inclusion.
Overall 16 companies were approached to fill the questionnaire for the Inclusion and Diversity Award. Some companies decided not to participate as they felt they still had a long way to complete this process of inclusion, some others had long internal processes that could not be completed to enable them to answer the questionnaire. The 7 companies that send in their filled up questionnaires were analysed.
Step 3: Analysis of the Questionnaires for final scores:
The questionnaires were analysed and companies were rated as high, low or medium according to the level of achievement in each parameter.
- Number of employees in this category
- Performance Improvement System
- Career Progression
- Strategic Inclusion
- Inclusion of persons with disability in policies and procedures.
The response of 7 companies were rated and presented to the Jury.
Step 4: : Jury Meeting:
- Enable India & BCF prepared the jury docket.
- BCF presented and participated in jury meeting.
- Process of selecting the final winner by the Jury.
