The CSR awards are based on the international framework for Corporate Reporting called the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the reports are internationally accepted as “ Sustainability Reports”. Globally these reports are in the public domain and report on all the parameters of the company and indicates their social and environmental responsibilities.
The Business and Community Foundation (BCF), a national civil society organization which has extensive knowledge & experience in CSR conducted the review itself as well as through setting up of an independent panel to arrive at the final analysis.
Step 1: Identify Indian Companies reporting on the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and in the public domain :
There are 25 Indian companies reporting on GRI sustainability reports and have been listed in the public domain. Only the top rated companies classified as G3 A+ were considered. Companies which were not A+ were not considered in the analysis. Ten companies qualified. Final analysis were based on 8 companies who had 3 years continuous reports in the public domain / on the website.
Step 2: Analyse the nominated companies on the basis of the six broad parameters listed under the GRI framework.The six broad parameters from the GRI framework which were analysed are as below:
• Economic Indicators (EC)
• Environment(EN)
• Society (SO)
• Labour Practices (LA)
• Human Rights (HR)
• Product Responsibility (PR)
Step 3: Under each of the Performance Indicators there are sub indicators, each of the sub indicators was scored on a scale of 1 to 5 and each parameter scored upto a maximum of 25. An equal weightage (which is the simplest analysis) was given across indicators.All companies were been scored on a total score of 150
Step 4: : Jury Meeting; For the Jury meeting the Jury Dockets were prepared consisting of all scores and analysis. This was presented in detail to Jury members for discussion, queries & final scores & selection of the awardee.
