On July 26,1999 our soldiers fought an armed conflict with Pakistan at the heights of Kargil and Drass and after fighting for over 40 days managed to defeat the Pakistani infiltrators, in the process losing 500 soldiers' lives. In memory of these young men the army celebrates Kargil Vijay Diwas on the 26th of July.

Ten years later the war is over but for our soldiers who are guarding these borders the battle is still on. Living in harsh climates and inhospitable conditions, their lives are hard, lonely and cut off from the outside world as they guard our borders. Each and every one of these jawans are the unsung heroes of India.
