Barkha Dutt The CBI has given a clean chit to Jagdish Tytler for his involvement in the 1984 riots case, recommending quashing of the FIR against the Congress leader. However, the BJP has consistently argued that the Congress has misused the CBI. When we look at the Congress’ stand on Varun Gandhi’s alleged hate speech, one finds them in the mode of criticism. With Tytler getting a clean chit, is this not a case of doublespeak?

Next on the show - Muslim organisations have expressed displeasure over the Supreme Court judge Markandeya Katju's observations that growing a beard was akin to promoting Talibanisation' in the country. The judge had made the remark while rejecting a Muslim student's plea that he be allowed to sport a beard in his school.

Join Barkha Dutt for a debate on this and lots more on Buck Stops Here.

Sikhs protest against clean chit to Tytler
NDTV Correspondent
Thursday, April 02, 2009
After CBI's clean chit to Tytler, the Sikh community in Delhi came out in protest holding posters and shouting slogans.

NDTV Varun's arrest: BJP, Cong at loggerheads
NDTV Varun's remarks surprised me: Rahul

Gursharan S. Sidhu , NCR :

The Congress and the BJP are similar in this respect. Both are indulging in doublespeak.
4/2/2009 8:17:44 PM

Ahamed Sulaiman , Chennai :

It is upto an institution to have its own set of rules and regulations. But at the same time the comments made by a learned judge of the apex court is unpleasant, unwarranted, painful & even condemnable.
4/2/2009 7:47:06 PM

krishnaala , bangalore :

CBI right and deserves appreciation for loyalty. Allegation against Varun is attempt to provoke sentiments of minority which is unpardonable where as Tytler is evidenced to have actually committed the offence of enabling the massacre of thousands of a miniscule minority for a cause. If the anology is drawn for a certain section of IPC which punishes the attempt of an offence but exhonerates the actual committment of the offence, then CBI is right and Tytler should go scot free.
4/2/2009 7:37:08 PM

Anirban , Kolkata :

The judge’s equating a Muslim’s beard with Talibanisation is shocking and alarming. Will then the esteemed judge ask Sikhs to stop wearing turban? This shows judge’s bias towards a particular community.
4/2/2009 7:33:26 PM

Asim Bhatia , New Delhi :

In the history of the country hardly any political leader of repute has been punished or sentenced who have been involved in rioting and killing. So, occasional noise by media over these issues does not solve the purpose. It’s systemic problem and the entire bureaucracy, the police and the judiciary needs to be overhauled in order to impose a sense of justice for the victims of injustice and violence.
4/2/2009 7:32:31 PM

Saif , New Delhi :

The tragedy is that it’s not only the Congress which indulges in double-speak but also the other national party (BJP). Rioters and politicians accused of rioting and arson have always been shielded by the power that be. So, instead of crying over one Jagdish Tytler or Modi we need to weed out thousands of Tytlers and Modis who are part of the system.
4/2/2009 7:29:03 PM

op verma , Kolkata :

If the parties are compelled to shun the religion totally from the governance, then only secularism can be accepted. Presently, the meaning of the word secularism has been distorted to such an extent that it has come to mean apeasing minority communities at the cost of majority.

Religion should be made private matter only and not the state. MP and MLAs should be barred from participating in any religious functions as representatives of people.
4/2/2009 7:10:26 PM

Athiravi , Nellai :

Varun and Tytler cannot be compared.

Varun was alleged that he indulged in hate speech.
He was not allegedly involved in mob killing / masacre.

Whereas, Tytler was allegedly involved in mob killing / masacre tothe tune of 3000 people. There are eyewitnesses who are willing to come and give witness in the court as he was directly involved in it. (Even Modi's case he was not alleged that he was directly involved but only supported the activities or not have taken any action).

ATHIRAVI
4/2/2009 6:57:11 PM

Kumaresan , Doha :

Its not a surprise that CBI has given a clean chit to Taytler considering the fact that ever since the Independence not a single politician has been convicted by the court of law in India. This is not a surprise to Indians as we have seen this for ages since Independence, people have come to terms with this reality. Our memories are short lived, only for five years people forget and forgive easily. No matter which political party comes to power at the center the CBI will be used and abused to their whims and fancies.

Jai Hind!
