Ottawa: An Indian origin athlete and two silver medallists of the previous edition in Melbourne have been named in the 15-member Canadian weightlifting squad for next month's Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.

Jasvir Singh, from Burnaby city in British Columbia, came from Punjab in India in 2002 and he is making his first Commonwealth Games appearance since earning his Canadian citizenship.

"I feel extremely proud and happy. These Games will be one of the most memorable competitions of my life," Singh said in a release.

33-year-old Jasvir, who is competing in 62kg, had won Canadian national title thrice from 2006 to 2008. He also represented Canada in 2008 Beijing Olympics.

He now stands at eighth in the Commonwealth rankings of the past year on the basis of his 262kg lift at the World Championships in Goyang, Korea, in November last year.

Veterans Marilou Dozois-Prevost and Christine Girard, who each won a silver in women's 48kg and 63kg competitions respectively in Melbourne Commonwealth Games, have also been named in the eight men and seven women squad.

Girard, a fourth-place finisher at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, will make her third Commonwealth Games appearance.
