India will be able to deliver on CWG: SM Krishna

New York: As India is facing embarrassing questions regarding Commonwealth Games' preparedness from participating countries, Foreign Minister SM Krishna tells NDTV's Sarah Jacob in New York that he is confident and has assured all that India will be able to deliver on the Games.

"I have assured all concerned that India will be able to deliver at the Commonwealth Games. The prolonged monsoons have created several problems. But the committee under the Cabinet Secretary is supervising various aspects of the Games. I spoke to the Cabinet Secretary this morning and I have been assured by him that things will fall into place and athletes will be happy and the Games will certainly go on as planned and will be successful," he said. The foot overbridge collapse at the presitigious Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi on Tuesday and concerns raised by the Commonwealth Games bosses about conditions in the Games Village had the world media scrutinising India's preparedness for the Commonwealth Games

The mega even is just 10 days away, but a whole lot of things are yet to be fixed:

  • The Athletes' village which has earned the tag 'unlivable' has only 18 of 34 towers complete
  • At the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, part of the false ceiling in weightlifting area collapsed on Wednesday
  • The foot overbridge leading to the Nehru Stadium, the main venue of the Games, collapsed on Tuesday
  • Roof of the Yamuna Sports Complex was damaged by heavy rain in July
  • The Shivaji Stadium is no longer to be used as a venue as it is not going to be ready on time
  • And to top it all, Delhi is experiencing the worst monsoon in 30 years
  • There are pools of rain water where mosquitoes are breeding causing the dreaded dengue
