Yamuna crosses danger mark, flood threat looms

New Delhi: The water level of Yamuna River has crossed the danger level due to incessant rains in the last three days, forcing the government to evacuate people living in low-lying areas along its bank.

It has been raining heavily in Delhi for the last 24 hours that has resulted in flooding and huge traffic jams. Ground floors of some houses in south Delhi are flooded. Rainfall in August for Delhi has been more than a 100% of the normal amount.

The river crossed the danger level of 204.83 metres last evening and now it is flowing 11 cm above the danger mark, a senior official said.

Alerts have been already issued anticipating fears of a flood. Some families living in low-lying areas in North-East, East and South-East Delhi have been evacuated. Tents were placed at higher-reaches for people living in the low lying areas.

Two children, who had fallen into flooded water in Kursiya ghat of Yamuna Bazaar area, have now been rescued by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team.

Wazirabad and Okhla barrage has been opened which might help the level of water to go down in a few hours.

Till now about 2 lakh 5 thousand cusec of water have been released from Yamunagar in Haryana. (With PTI inputs)
