Undertrial commits suicide in jail
Mumbai: An undertrial arrested in connection with a theft case has allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in high-security Arthur road jail in south Mumbai, police said on Friday.

Manoj Bhansode (37) was last night found hanging to a window rod with a bed sheet inside the lock-up of the high-security jail where Mumbai terror attacks accused Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab has also been lodged, they said.

"Five other inmates who were also sharing the lock up with him at Circle number four in the jail were sleeping when the incident occurred," Vasant Tajne, senior inspector of N M Joshi police station said.

Bhansode was arrested by Meghwadi police on December 15. The next day, he was produced before a local court which remanded him in judicial custody till December 30, he said.

Police are investigating if the undertrial had an argument or fight with any of the inmates.

Based on a complaint lodged by the family members of Bhansode, a case under Section 174 of CrPC was registered and further investigation was on.
