Twelve-year-old off from skywalk, suffers brain haemorrhage

Mumbai: Twelve year-old Altaf Khan, who fell through the railings of the Bandra skywalk three days ago and suffered a brain haemorrhage, is yet to recover.

Khan's elder brother, Akbar, who works at a shop on Linking Road said, "My mother is very weak. I'm worried for her. Altaf hasn't recovered. The doctors aren't saying anything concrete and I don't know what will happen. All we can do is pray." The family has fallen into financial trouble tending to Khan's hospital expenditure.

Adds Khan's mother Shamin, "Altaf used to go out to play every day because his summer holidays are on. I never enquired about his  whereabouts. I curse myself for not doing so."

Khan, a resident of the Maharashtra Nagar slum, was playing with some friends on the skywalk at Bandra on Wednesday afternoon when he fell through the railings.

His family received news of the mishap from the bystanders who admitted Khan to the hospital and went searching for his family in Maharashtra Nagar.

Assistant dean of KEM Hospital, Praveen Bangar, is optimistic about the child's recovery. "We expect the boy to recover. However, he is still in the ICU and we are monitoring him continuously," he said.
