Terror suspect will soon become a Doctor

Bangalore: If all goes well, Mohammed Asif, a 25-year-old terror suspect, will soon become a  qualified doctor.

Asif, who's accused of conducting terror camps in the forests of Karnataka, has obtained permission from the Dharwad district court to appear for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) final year exam.

Currently lodged at Hindalaga Jail in Belgaum, Asif will give the practical exam at Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) in Hubli. He was in the final year of MBBS when cops arrested him in 2008 on charges of being associated with a banned terror outfit.

Asif recently approached the district court seeking its permission to allow him complete his studies. The court directed KIMS to seek opinion of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, which said that Asif could give the exams under adequate security.

The date of examination, which would be held in June, will be announced next week and Asif will appear for the subject of gynecology and medicine. He would be brought to the examination centre from the Hindalaga Jail every day.

D Prakash, the SP of Dharwar, said, "If the court has granted him the permission to appear for exams that we'll definitely allow him. However, we'll be quite strict with him during the exam, as he's accused of being involved in some grave offences."
