Teacher killed for not allowing student to cheat

Sonepat: Two days after a private school teacher in Sonepat was allegedly killed for not allowing a student to cheat in an examination, the police have arrested Vikram Singh, one of the two accused in the case.

37-year-old Rakesh Kumar was allegedly run over by Vikram Singh and Hari Om, after he had refused to let a student cheat in the Haryana Open School Examinations on April 7 (Friday).

Hari Om is still missing. "We will soon have the other accused arrested," Sonepat's Deputy Superintendent of Police, Surinder Malik, said.

Mr Kumar died of head injuries at Delhi's Jaipur Golden Hospital on Friday. He gave a statement to the police, identifying his killers before dying of his injuries.

A Hindi teacher at the Ramjas Public School in Sonepat, Mr Kumar was returning home from an examination centre on Friday, when the two accused stopped him and allegedly asked him to allow a student to cheat in a Haryana Open School Examination.

When Mr Kumar refused, the men, who were in a car, allegedly ran him over - twice.

Mr Kumar's father and brother were with him and they claim that the attackers had been pressuring Mr Kumar for some time to permit the student to cheat in the exams.  One of them is reportedly a friend of the student who wanted to be allowed to cheat, while the other is related to him, the police said.

"They wanted him to help them cheat. He refused and this is how it ended." Mukesh said.

The state government admits more needs to be done to avoid such incidents and has promised justice for the victims. ''We know there are problems. We have taken some steps. But more needs to be done to see that teachers are safe," Geeta Bhukal, Haryana's Education Minister said.
