Teacher forces girl to strip for speaking in Telugu

Vijayawada: A teacher on Thursday allegedly forced a girl student to strip for speaking Telugu in an English medium school, sparking a protest by parents and women organisations against the management, police said.

Annoyed over the third standard student speaking with her friends in Telugu in the classroom, the English subject teacher asked the girl to remove her shirt and stand on the bench for an hour as a punishment.

Later, the girl complained to her parents against the incident following which they lodged a complaint against the teacher with the management of the private school at Ajitsingh Nagar area here.

The management immediately suspended the teacher following the complaint, police said, adding that they have also registered a case in this regard.

Meanwhile, various women organisations and parents association staged demonstration in front of the school against the incident and urged the government to de-recognise the institute.

Reacting on the incident, Minister for Secondary Education D Manikya Varaprasad said in Hyderabad that an inquiry would be conducted into the matter and if the school authority is found guilty then the recognition of the school will be cancelled.

A similar incident had taken place in Assam in which a class VIII student at an English-medium school in Guwahati tried to kill herself after teachers pulled her up for not speaking in English. (Read: Student attempts suicide over English in school)
