Surat father kills son to escape debt

Surat: In a shocking case, a Surat father has allegedly confessed to killing his own son to get rid of his debts.

Eight-year-old Yash Markana was murdered on Sunday night by his own father Mukesh.

Police say Mukesh, a textile trader in Surat, had run up a debt of 40 lakh rupees. So he orchestrated the kidnap and murder of his own son, hoping that creditors who were hounding him would sympathise with him and let him off.

The police say Mukesh confessed to the crime during interrogation.

"I wanted money, that's why I did this. And since it is time for Diwali, a circular was issued in my name. So that's why I did this hoping that everything will fall into routine after Diwali," Mukesh Markana said.

"I was trying to commit suicide myself but ended up killing him," he added.

Meanwhile, police investigation continues to look for more clues.

"The father has confessed to the murder and we have that on video tape. Investigations are on. It is too early to give specific reasons for what went on in his mind. We have a few crucial leads which we are following. Hopefully in a few days we will have more clarity, said Shivanand Jha, the city Police Commissioner.
