Students clash over principal's appointment

Madurai: About 20 students and staff of a reputed private college here were injured today after a clash between two groups of students over the issue of appointment of a new principal to the institution.
    
Police said about 20 two wheelers and seven buses were also damaged in the clash that took place in the American College here over the recent appointment of R Mohan as the new principal for the institution.
    
Those opposing the appointment also demanded among other things the third and fifth semester mark sheets for Under Graduate and Post Graduate courses, police said.
    
They added that about 100 students were arrested for allegedly indulging in violence, which saw the supporters of the new principal and those against his appointment pelt stones at each other.
    
The protesting students charged that the college management was intimidating them by threatening their parents that their wards would be thrown out of the hostel, if they participated in the stir. They also alleged that the hostel warden was using abusive language towards them.
    
The principal Mohan, however, denied the charges.
