Soon, six-lane flyover at Gota to take care of traffic woes

Ahmedabad: If everything goes according to plan, work on the six-lane split flyover at the Gota crossroads on the Sarkhej-Gandhinagar highway will start after Diwali. The state's roads and buildings department has already invited tenders from interested parties for the contract to build the flyover.

Senior officials in the National Highways division of the R&B department say that processing of bids is going on and construction work for the flyover may begin anytime after Diwali. If the builder given the contract for the project keeps to the deadline of 15 months set by the R&B department for completion of work, the flyover may be ready by early 2012.

"The split flyover will be built on the lines of the flyover coming up at the Iscon crossroads," said a senior official in the NH division of the R&B department. "It will be 17 metre wide and around 1 km long."

The official said that because of the high volume of traffic on the SG highway, it was important that the Gota flyover be completed at the earliest. The flyover will not only decongest this key road, it will also bring down the number of accidents on the highway. The official added that Rs28 crore had been allocated for the project.

The length of the flyover in the direction of Gandhinagar (from the crossroads) will be around 407 metre, while its length from the crossroads in the direction of Sarkhej will be around 435 metre. The length of the stretch over the crossroads would be 100 metre.

While the central government has sanctioned the Gota flyover, two other projects that can improve Ahmedabad's connectivity with Gandhinagar, are still pending with the Centre. "One is an underpass at Thaltej which will cost Rs50 crore to build," said the official.
