Pune: Autorickshaw owners threaten stir over LPG, CNG shortage

Pune: The Rickshaw Panchayat has threatened to start an agitation if there is no improvement in the supply of the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) to the city.

Rickshaw Panchayat chief Baba Adhav told reporters on Thursday autorickshaw drivers are facing problems in getting LPG and CNG to run their vehicles. There are over 12,000 autorickshaws plying on LPG and around 8,000 on CNG in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.

"It is four years now since some auto men have opted for LPG fuel for their vehicles. But there are just seven outlets providing the fuel, which is not at all sufficient," he added.

Similarly, he said, the mother CNG station at Narvir Tanajiwadi is yet to start operations. The 11 CNG centres are located in the fringe areas of the city. There are long queues at both LPG and CNG stations.

Adhav said, "The Regional Transport Office (RTO) has stopped registration of new autorickshaws running on petrol. Only LPG and CNG-operated rickshaws are registered, which is not fair. But the supply of LPG and CNG should be improved so that the auto drivers do not have to waste time refilling their vehicles."

Adhav demanded that all the issues regarding autorickshaws in Pune should be solved on priority, failing which the Rickshaw Panchayat will be forced to agitate.
