Philips Healthcare to open plant in Chakan

Pune: Philips Healthcare, a unit of Royal Philips Electronics of the Netherlands, held the ground-breaking ceremony of its manufacturing site at Chakan MIDC recently. The new facility will also have a research and development wing.

Addressing a press conference, vice president and managing director of Philips Electronics India, Murali Sivaraman, said the company is trying to bring global standards in manufacturing into India.

"This is our first greenfield site of manufacturing in India. There are only five other sites of Philips elsewhere in the world. This site will cater mainly to the imaging systems manufacturing, including cardiovascular and X-ray equipment. The plant will be operational by mid-2012."

The site at Chakan is spread over 10 acres and will manufacture 5,000 units of general X-ray machines in the first year of operation. In the cardiovascular section, the demand at present is for 30 units and may go up to 100 machines a year.

In 2008 Philips acquired two local Indian healthcare companies, Alpha and Meditronics, that manufacture cardiovascular X-ray and general X-ray systems respectively. The general X-ray market anticipates annual growth rate of more than 10% in the coming years, while cardiovascular X-ray market projects a growth rate of 15%.
