Nine-year-old shot dead during celebratory firing in Bareilly

Bareilly: From Uttar Pradesh comes the story of yet another atrocious incident. A nine-year-old boy was shot dead during celebratory firing in Bareilly. Celebratory firing, which has even been banned by the Supreme Court, took place during the oath taking ceremony of Riyaz Ansari, an independent candidate in the civic body.

The police said it was an accident but were unable to explain how Mr Ansari's supporters were able to sneak in firearms.

"The oath taking ceremony was going on... 70 per cent of the guests had left by then. It was accidental. The accused has been arrested and the investigations are on... We have sent a report to the Chief Minister's relief Fund. We will provide the family with whatever help possible," said Vandita Srivastav, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Bareilly.
