Mysuru Celebrates Vijayadashami With Jamboo Savari, Karnataka Tableaux

Mysuru's big Vijayadashami procession, bringing up the rear, was the Jamboo Savari.

Mysuru:

Mysuru's big Vijayadashami procession - which starts at the Amba Vilas palace and winds its way through the city - was held on Tuesday. Before the procession began, people in their thousands lined the streets of Mysuru in anticipation of the Jamboo Savari or the elephant procession - a tradition that goes back centuries.

Yaduveer Srikantadatta Chamaraja Wodeyar, the man who would have been a maharaja had India retained royal titles, witnessed his first Dasara after his coronation.

The rain made the afternoon pleasant just as the procession began. The Dasara show with the traditional pageantry wound its way through Mysuru as the rain continued off and on.

Tableaux encompassing Karnataka's culture and practices were also part of the show.

Bringing up the rear, was the highlight of the procession: the Jamboo Savari.

Arjuna, the elephant, who has carried the 750 kg golden howdah with the idol of the goddess Chamundeshwari each dasara since 2012, was the showstopper and was greeted by the crowds

Arjuna's troop of jumbos, who were also beautifully decorated, too were cheered by the thousands who lined the streets.

With Dasara now done with, the pachyderms are now counting the days till they return to the forests of Nagarahole, where they live for the rest of the year.
