Mumbai: Man kills mother, wife after being called impotent

Mumbai: Bangur Nagar police on Saturday arrested a 33-year-old man for allegedly killing his wife and senior citizen mother, after the mother sided with his wife during a quarrel on Friday night.

The accused, identified as Arjun Harijan, would often fight with his wife Rasu Harijan (35) for not having borne a child in spite of over five years of marriage, the police said. According to the police, the incident transpired at around 11pm on Friday night at Muttumari Nagar area in Malad. During a conversation about her failure to bear him a child, Arjun got angry and reportedly even assaulted her.

Witnesses told police it was then that Arjun's 70-year-old mother Kunjma Harijan intervened to cool things down. But he got further infuriated when his mother said he should stop blaming his wife since the problem could also be from his side. "She told him that he should consider Rasu's two children (from her earlier marriage) as his own," said senior police inspector Maruti Telang of Bangur Nagar police station. Consequently, Arjun got aggressive and started abusing his ailing mother.

The police said that after the fight, Arjun rushed out of the house, and Kunjma and Rasu went off to sleep. But he returned sometime later. "He picked up a grinding stone from the corner, using it to smash their heads," said an officer. The women's screams alerted the neighbours who rushed to the spot. The locals then informed the police. The victims were rushed to Bhagwati Civic Hospital in Borivli, where they were later declared dead. Medical tests reveal that the accused was not drunk at the time of the incident, though he reportedly drank almost every day.

Rasu's failure to deliver a child had become a bone of contention between the couple. Sources said that Rasu even visited a gynaecologist but was still unable to conceive. The couple had reportedly even visited various religious places for the same.
