Mumbai: Income tax raids on Bollywood personalities

Mumbai: The Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) wing of the Income Tax department conducted surveys at the residences and offices of filmmaker Yash Chopra, producer Sajid Nadiadwala, and proprietor of Baba Films Govardhan Tanwani. The searches, started on Thursday morning, continued on Friday, I-T sources said.

While Chopra was unavailable for comment, Nadiadwala confirmed that I-T officials checked his records. "It was a routine I-T inspection," he told DNA.

Industry sources revealed that Baba Films, the producers of movies like Ishq and Taarzan -- The Wonder Car, were also surveyed by the IT department. While two offices of Baba Films were searched on Thursday, a raid had been carried out on Baba Films two years ago. A couple of days back, officials had raided the premises of actor Salman Khan's brother, Arbaaz, during which they found Rs15 crore.

Earlier on Thursday, the department also conducted raids on more than 15 premises of Welspun, a home textile multinational company, spread across four states. While most premises to be raided were from Mumbai and Gujarat, where the company has its head office and factories respectively, raids also took place in Delhi and Orissa. The raids were conducted as the department had information about the multinational company allegedly rotating money through a large number of investment companies.

During the raids, authorities found Rs60 lakh from Welspun's premises in Mumbai and Gujarat. Officials are now in the process of finding out whether the cash was declared.
