Mumbai: Constable found dead in police van

Mumbai: A police constable was found dead in a police van parked at the parade ground near the police headquarters in mysterious circumstances. The cause of his death is yet to be ascertained.

The deceased constable, Rajkumar Koli, 50, was attached to the police headquarters. A native of village Jat in Sangli district, Koli had abandoned his duties since June 2010.

On Monday, some people encountered foul smell from a police van that was parked at the parade ground. Koli's partially decomposed body was found in the vehicle, it is estimated that he may have died at least three days ago.

According to police officials, Koli had joined the police force in 1981 and was suspended twice for irregularities. He once went missing with his service rifle and this resulted in suspension on one occasion. Thane police registered a case of accidental death. "The reason behind Koli's death can be ascertained only after post mortem reports," MP Patil, police sub inspector with the Thane town police added.
