Man robs bank of over Rs 1 lakh, caught by mob

Ahmedabad: For a robber in the city, the story went as per the script until the end, when he faced an anti-climax of sorts. The robber had managed to rob a branch of the State Bank of India (SBI) of over Rs 1 lakh all with the help of a toy gun and a knife. But the script went drastically wrong after some determined members of the bank pursued him and he was caught by a crowd who thrashed him mercilessly.

The incident happened in an SBI branch near CTM, National Highway-8 in Ramol area. On Wednesday afternoon at around 3:30 PM the robber succeeded in walking off with over Rs 1 lakh from the cashier after pointing a toy gun at him. The bank's manager and accountant tried to stop him from fleeing.

It should be noted that the branch did not have any security including CCTV cameras. In the meantime, the robber attacked the manager, who was pursuing him, with a knife. The manager was injured in the incident. Meanwhile, the accountant continued to pursue the robber and began shouting for help from passers by. By the time, the robber reached Nidhi Bank near Bharvi Tower he was caught by a mob who gave him a sound thrashing. It was then that the patrolling squad of Ramol police arrived at the scene.

"When our team reached the spot the man identified as Dinesh M Patel, resident of Mehsana, was badly beaten up by the mob. We could not interrogate him immediately as he was not able to speak. We have admitted him to the hospital," said police inspector JM Solanki. He said money stolen from the bank has also been recovered. A complaint has been filed by a bank employee Bala Anjariya. The injured bank manager, JN Sinha, was admitted to Siddhi Vinayak Hospital.
