Man burnt at girlfriend's home in Delhi

Delhi: A 38-year-old married man who had gone to meet his 28-year-old girlfriend at her home in Kamla Market area of central Delhi suffered critical burn injuries under mysterious circumstances.

The police say the victim set himself on fire.

"Niyaz has received 90 per cent burn injuries. He has been admitted to a government hospital where he is undergoing treatment and his condition is stated to be critical by the doctors. He wanted to marry his girlfriend Veena while she was spurning his advances. Today he went to her place carrying a bottle full of petrol.  He poured the petrol on himself and sprinkled the rest inside the house. Veena rushed outside and raised an alarm but by then he had set himself on fire," said a senior police officer.

Niyaz worked at his sister Neha Singh's office who runs a cable TV business in the area. He developed relations with Veena when he went to her house to provide a cable connection. Since then they had been lovers. Speaking to the reporter, Neha alleged that Niyaz had been called by Veena to her home.

"Veena asked him to check her gas cylinder and when Niyaz bent down, she poured petrol on him and set him on fire. She also called her father and brother who fabricated this story of self-immolation. Niyaz had been supporting her family and used to give them a small amount of money every month. Veena had made arrangements for their marriage but for the last five days they had been quarreling over petty issues. Veena had hatched a plan to kill him," alleged Neha.

Police say they are investigating the matter.
