Kingfisher crude bomb: Man questioned kills himself

Kingfisher crude bomb: Man questioned kills himself
Thiruvananthapuram: He was questioned in connection with the crude bomb found on a Kingfisher flight last month.  In a suicide note left behind on Tuesday, Sunil Lawrence, who worked as a cleaner at the Thiruvananthapuram airport says he decided to kill himself because he couldn't prove his innocence.

Lawrence alleged that because of his interrogation and detention, he lost a job opportunity in the Middle East.

Last month, a crude bomb was found in the cargo section of a plane that had flown from Bangalore to Thiruvanthapuram. It was discovered during a routine security check after passengers had left the plane. The low-intensity explosive was found wrapped in a Malayalam newspaper.

The crude bomb exposed a series of security lapses. Among them: how did the flight take off without the package being detected? Another major concern: that the package could not be traced to a passenger or to a courier company.

After the incident, new guidelines have been introduced which mandate that the names and addresses of senders of all couriered packages have to be verified.

The Kingfisher incident was investigated by police officials from both Bangalore and Thiruvananthapuram.  Passengers on the flight and airport staff in both cities were questioned.
