Jodhpur: School kids 'hired' as MNREGA workers, says CAG report

Jodhpur: The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has unearthed a case of school children being registered as workers under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) in Phalodi panchayat samiti in Jodhpur district.

Wages for over 350 work days were released towards these children for the year 2008-09, the report said adding that job cards were issued to least six children in three gram panchayats.

After these cases were detected, the District Collector conducted an enquiry, terminated the services of rozgar sahayak and cancelled the fake job cards.

Punitive action is yet to be taken against the village sarpanch and the panchayat secretary.

The CAG teams were auditing MNREGA works in Phalodi tehsil for the year 2008-09 when it found that some school children were registered as MNREGA workers in Khara, Dayasagar and Hanumanpura villages.

The audit mentioned that rules of the MNREG Act were violated to issue job cards to Bhajanaram, Sriram, Jeevram, Balkishan, Ramesh and Dinesh, who were school-going children. Payments of about 350 work days were made against these children's names.

The CAG para has been issued to Jodhpur Zila Parishad and the CEO of parishad, Anandi, forwarded the case to MNREGA coordinator of the Falodi Panchayat Samiti.

She further stated that the enquiry has been completed and following the orders of district collector the rozgar sahayak dismissed.

Disciplinary action has been proposed against the concerned panchayat secretary and a chargesheet too had been prepared against the sarpanch. "The file has been sent for approval to the divisional commissioner," the CEO said.
