Seventeen hours after the chimney of a power plant collapsed in Jhansi, almost 50 labourers are still trapped under the debris.

The accident took place on Monday afternoon when labourers were resting after lunch. Six of them were taken out on Monday, SSP Vinod Kumar Dohre had told PTI.

The Army has been called in for rescue and gas cutters and earth movers are being used to remove the huge pile of debris.

The 220-metre high chimney was being constructed by a Central agency at Parichcha thermal power station.

Power department sources claimed that there were inputs suggesting that the chimney was slightly lop-sided and directives had been issued to rectify it. The accident site is some 30 km from the district headquarters. (With PTI inputs)
