Jaipur: A dozen houses may be razed for new tunnel plan

Jaipur: In a bid to change alignment of Ghat ki Guni tunnel, the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) has revised the project and forwarded it to the forest department for approval. However the amendments in the original plan are likely to cost around a dozen houses situated near the Agra road.

According to the revised plan the depth of tunnel has been decreased from 35-44 meters to 20 meters. With this, now the contractor firm will have to dig the Jhalana hills comparatively less.
Also the inside alignment of tunnel has been changed and now it has been turned 20 meters towards Jawahar Nagar slum.

With now the JDA needs 13.25 hectares forest land while earlier 14.4 hectares forest land was needed for the project. "The new design of alignment demands lesser forest land which is 13.25 hectares. We have forwarded this proposal to the forestdepartment for approval," said he.

However the change of alignment will also shift catchment area of the tunnel. It means that some houses, in the vicinity, will have to be demolished for the tunnel work.

"Around 12 houses are likely to be demolished near Jawahar Nagar slum," accepted an engineer with the project.
In the revised plan the authority has proposed 847 meters long tunnel instead of a 647 meters one. The development authority earlier too proposed 113 metres length, but the proposal was not sent to the forest department.

It may be recalled that JDA had contracted a Mumbai based private firm to construct 647 metres long tunnel to connect Jawahar Nagar with Agra road by cutting the Jhalana hills.

The firm has been contracted for `150 crore and will complete the tunnel in 18 months. At present JDA is digging soil for the tunnel.
